Great First Half
Okay. If you're looking for something light-hearted ... this is not nor will ever be the book for you. If you are instead looking for a book detailing the early life (age 4-11 for book one) of one of the best. if not the best, shinobi from the Naruto franchise- this will be for you. I recommend this to any Itachi or Naruto fan who enjoys real ninjas. This isn't your kid's bed time story, this is the steady growth and psychological view from a shinobi who was surrounded by an immeasurable amount of despair from an early age and as such wanted peace more than anyone else. But realizes that it may not be possible as some sides are against the notion of peace. It's effectively a story about growing up and losing one's innocent views of the world. Of maturing. Of getting strong to protect what is dear to you. A story where a kid (as there is introspection present in this tale) can notice that no side is 100% right, whether that be his best friend, the village, or his clan that is bent on a power grab that will hurt civilians. In other words, if the Narutoverse were our world but without all the showy explosions and aspects of shounen- Itachi's life could very well have existed. Which makes any semblance of happiness present in this book (keep in mind, this is mildly cheerful during minor moments at best ... as it should be in a shinobi verse) all the more saddening when it seems to be slipping away towards the end. But, if you're still adamant about purchasing it when you're one of those people that likes fluffy, happy things, go for it. There are minor happy moments in Itachi's life. He has a chat with Naruto, which is interesting for both of them. He is a great brother to Sasuke, which is no surprise. He's a good friend to Shisui. His moments with his love interest and good friend, Izumi, are adorable. It's not devoid of good memories. Though, they aren't littering the book. Which in turn, makes them all the more special when he does enjoy his life. And he progresses and gets closer to his goal of getting strong to protect those he cares about in the village. All of that. This in combination with book 2 (yes, yes Japan did choose to divide his story into two books- there was so much to cover and even now still possibly more as the books don't go over his Akatsuki days + he's a fan fave so it's not surprising they did this; people are willing to buy these and they were a hit in Japan) comprise the best story of the Shinden/Hidens so far. At least, if you consider the best stories to be those that have some level of seriousness to them. If you're a pairing fan, aside from Itachi x Izumi, these books won't help you much. If you want books where there are clear sides of good and evil, these aren't for you. If you don't like traditional ninja fights with swords, kunai, etc and instead want rasengan and chidori explosions then this isn't for you. If you would rather read something totally happy, go to another character's novel page, please. If you're still here after reading this review, by all means buy this book and Vol 2. You will not regret it. Have fun reading!

Read this Review! What you need to know
My book came in perfect condition so look at the good pictures of it. I happened to be fortunate on the condition. If you haven’t read the description on the back cover give it a quick glance because it is accurate. I think they should mention that this book is part one of two to Itachi’s story, but other than that EVERYTHING about this book is great. This book is a dark truth to the life of Itachi as he honestly came to see the world he would grow up into and from a young age it was clear to see the genius that laid dormant. You see the things that made him into the character we know him as and grasp an understanding of how he thinks. Important characters like Shisui are introduced and it talks a lot about the structure of peace (the military police and anbu). This character is easily the most interesting in the entire series and even in anime entirely. If you are a fan, PLEASE read this. You will not regret it if you are curious in the slightest of the early life of Itachi. Not a doubt in my mind that this is cannon to series and honestly they should make a short filler series of this.

One of the best characters from the Naruto Universe
Okay, so you might be reading the description of the product and you're thinking: "I've read the manga and I've watched the whole series. What more could I learn from Itachi that I don't already?".The short answer to that question is: a lot! The novel takes us from Itachi's first days to entry to the ANBU. We also get a lot of answers to questions like:Why does Itachi's substitution jutsu consist of crows? What motivated Itachi as a ninja? What were his team missions like as a gennin and a chunnin? What was his chunnin exam like?Under what circunstances did he obtain his sharingan? Those are just some of the questions that the novel answers and it just puts Itachi Uchiha under a whole new light even for people who know his story from the manga and the anime. The storytelling is always from Itachi's perspective unless we go to other characters (which sometimes we do). The novel also makes tiny mentions to people who during the anime are gone but were still alive during Itachi's time in the village. This novel is just fantastic! Highly recommend it.

Pretty neat.
I am not a fan of novels, but because this being about Itachi Uchiha it held my interest. I liked reading about his backstory more in-depth, as he is one of the characters in the series that felt important enough to have additional back story made about him, but never did in the manga (I understand this novel is debatably not canon. Writing was done by a different guy than the manga author, but things were 'supervised' or 'approved' by manga author, as well as illustrations done by the manga author. It feels as close as we will ever get for more Itachi backstory material, so whatever. I still enjoyed it.It ain't the best thing ever, so you should only read this if you are a fan of the series or Itachi.
