Great Book but NOT COMPATIBLE WITH KINDLE PAPER WHITE.
Although my 11-yr-old daughter and I love this book for its great brilliantly colorful illustrations, clarity and detail, I can only give this four stars because it is incompatible with my Kindle Paper White and we thus have to read it on a Kindle For PC, which takes 30 seconds to load a new page. So if you don't already own a Kindle Fire, you will be forced to either suffer through reading at a snail's pace on Kindle for PC, or add a Kindle Fire to your cart and pay the additional $90 - $120 for a compatible reader,, buy a paperback version instead and wait for the snail mail.As it turns out, having begun reading the book on the PC, she requested the hardcopy to bring to Computing class at school as she doesn't want to have to waste time learning how to use the Kindle Fire just to read the book and she wouldn't be able to read the ebook on the school computer.. So for now we are reading it by PC, until the book arrives (and the Kindle Fire I ordered as well).

very helpful
I ordered this book for my 10 yr. old son. He has been asking to learn about programming games and this looked like an easy way for him to start. I was impressed with the way it talked to him without being baby-ish. He was able to do the first two projects by himself. The only problem we had was that the Scratch website had been rearranged since the printing of the book so some of the command block pieces were in different place than what the pictures showed. It took a little hunting but we did find everything that we needed. He spends about an hour or two a week on Scratch trying out games and creating his own stuff. If you are looking for a simple how-to on Scratch for a self motivated middle school child this might be a good choice for you.

Coding fun for the whole family!
This has been a wonderful introduction to scratch computer coding for my 6 year old boy and my 9 year old girl. I have only a smattering of experience with coding and had no experience with scratch before this, but found this book to be very easy to follow and teach from. I think of this book as a recipe book for beginning chefs, it gives an exact recipe (code for a game), but helps you to see how it could be used in other recipes (programs). I sit with my 6 year old and we do the lessons together exactly as written. He gets so excited seeing how he made something happen in his game. I sit sometimes with my 9 year old daughter and try to point out how each piece of code could be used in other programs, but she could do it all on her own, she doesn't actually need my help. I highly recommend this book as a fun introduction to scratch computer coding. It is a great book for interested 5-8 year olds as long as you are willing to work closely with them and can be done independently at about 9+.

Excellent book for learning programming fundamentals
I ordered this for my oldest (ten year old boy) who had been learning basic programming concepts in school. He had made a few games using another programming language (I apologize, the name of which escapes me). When he received this book he immediately dove right into it. Within about an hour he had Scratch set up on the family computer and created a very rudimentary game (a cat that shot fireballs at the enemy). Now, several weeks later, he has created some very nifty things. Moreover, his eight year old sister has also gotten into Scratch and is making her own games. This book is a terrific entry into the Scratch community. There are numerous online resources, including user group support, that helps my kids when I'm not able. The community even allows users to upload their Scratch programs for user review and comment. It's really a fantastic thing. I don't mean to gush but my kids have really latched onto Scratch.

Great to get kids started on Scratch
Scratch is a very powerful language and can be quite daunting for a kid to start and understand how to use all the controls. We got started watching some online videos but soon got stuck. This book is setup very well to pull the reader from the most basic controls through all the ones needed to make very cool looking games with multiple scripts, changing sprites and backgrounds and interactive controls. The Kindle version looks great on the Fire - just like the book. And the companion downloads make it easy so the kid can focus on the programming and have all the graphics ready.

Great guide for this visual programming language!
My kids have had a great time working through the exercises (disguised as adventures) in this book. I've worked through a couple along side them, and I'm impressed with the clarity of the presentation. I think my kids are developing a good feel for the logic behind how to construct a computer program, and will be pretty well-prepared for the next step of sitting down to write more tradional code.

12 year old nephew found this book helpful and fun
I got this book for nephew because he is interested in programming games. I introduced him to scratch, however he reach a ceiling by learning on his own. This book helped him move beyond his ceiling. He enjoyed it so much he finished working through the activities within a couple of weeks. This book was an enormous help. Now I feel he can move onto a real programming language.

Excellent Scratch Book
This is the second book on scratch programming you should get your child. The games they can make are really quite impressive. You need to make sure that they take things a chapter at a time though.Actually, forget that last bit about making sure they take things a chapter at a time. Our daughter has now demolished the book. She absolutely loved it, and got some great, playable games under her belt as a result. She had asked for my help at one point as she was stuck (presumably from skipping a bit), but before I could find time to sit down with her and go through it, she had found what her mistake was and was now racing ahead again. Any programmer will tell you that the best way to learn something is by doing it, and making mistakes, so now I would just say, give them the book and let them get on with it. They will let you know if they have hit a wall, and at then point you can introduce some structure. But until them, just let them get on with it. This book lets them do just that.

One good feature is that you can download all the projects ...
Got this to have something structured to work through with my daughter (8). Each chapter is a project and by the end of it you have a working Scratch game, with increasing sophistication. One good feature is that you can download all the projects either as completed versions or blank projects - though with all the sprites, backdrops and sounds added, with is very handy. Our only issue with this book is that it's clearly aimed at boys - all the characters are boys etc. This isn't a big deal and after working through the book we're quite capable of changing things about a bit :)
