The speaker was loose and had an annoying buzz unless the timer was face down.Solution:1. Note the position of the on/off switch before you open the case.2. Remove the battery.3. Remove the 6 small screws and GENTLY pull the front and back of the case apart.4. Remove the speaker from it's "cup"; taking care not to let the speaker fall out (which could pull it's connecting wires loose).5. Coat the inside of the speaker "cup" or the outside of the speaker itself with silicone sealant or other adhesive,6. Insert the speaker back into the cup.7. Position the on/off switch correctly as you bring the two halves of the case together.8. Screw the case together.9. Place the timer face down while letting the adhesive dry.

This works pretty well and doesn't cost too much. The temperature is easy to read. The on/off initiated by the probe hinge is not particularly reliable, but it doesn't matter too much as the on/off button works fine. The temperature reading is a bit slow to settle; I'd guess it takes 10 seconds or so, but that's OK for my purposes. It has a calibration routine using an ice slurry that might turn out to be handy, though mine seemed pretty close as is.

I bought this because it is called an "Instant Read Cooking Thermometer". Key word here is instant.In practice it is not instant, fast, quick, or anything close.It's nice that you can fold it up and put it in a pocket or apron and not impale yourself but if you want a quick read, go elsewhere.Follow-up:It's nice to know vendors pay attention to the reviews and feedback. The seller contacted me immediately after I left this review with only three starts and wanted to make sure I was a happy customer. I do appreciate the excellent customer service. Based on the many 5-star reviews of the product, perhaps I got a bad unit. Perhaps this is the best you get for the price point. In any case you can feel safe buying from this vendor.

Compared to a Thermapen, this thermometer takes a long time (10-15 seconds) to stabilize its reading at a temperature. Not surprising for 1/4 the price. You have to manually turn it on because it does not turn on automatically when the probe is unfolded. Backlight is nice. Accuracy seems to be okay.

I got this as a gift for my mom as she has been wanting one for awhile. I couldn't believe I found one so cheap. When I got it the box was all messed up and the actual product seemed rather cheap; tho it was cheap compared to name brands. It does work, but I have not tested it against other digital thermometers.

Although it has a clear large screen, setting the desired time is very noisy. Every time the minute or second button is pushed, it makes a very loud beep. Therefore, to set a time of 40 minutes, the minute button needs to be pressed 40 times or held down until it reaches 40. Either way, there are 40 loud beeps. I am returning this to Amazon.

Great quick-reading thermometer for the price. Good: accurate, turns on when you open it up, and a perfect size to use without getting burned by your roast. Not-as-good: Plastic quality is "hard," rather than "soft," meaning it might break if dropped on a hard surface -- but then it might just bounce. It's a very practical utensil to replace my little dial-type thermometer.

Nice large display. also love the fact that it shows the time in seconds and when the time is up, it shows what the original time set was. This is handy for baking because sometimes I set a short than recommended time and I don't always remember it by the end of the time. Also, it is nice that you can shut them off when not in use. Saves on batteries.
