Product Description These glamorous showgirls have everything a girl could want - except engagement rings! In a quest for true love, Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) and her gold digger pal Dorothy (Jane Russell) set sail on a luxury-liner bound for France. But the pair hits rocky waters when a manipulative detective, an over-aged, over sexed millionaire (Charles Coburn) and the entire men's Olympic team try to put an anchor in their marriage-minded mischief. It's a wild and joyously funny ride across the Atlantic as our bathing beauties plan and plot a way to land their men. .com Anita Loos's old story from the 1920s about a pair of single women in search of husbands gets a makeover in Howard Hawks's 1953 musical, starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe as friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit, and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. The film may largely be a fluff project best remembered as a showcase for its leading actresses, but then Monroe and Russell rarely got such extended opportunities to prove that they were more than cinematic icons. --Tom Keogh

Classic Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell
One of my absolute, all-time favorites! Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy (Jane Russell) are best friends and a pair of showgirls headed for Paris. Lorelei is going to marry her rich fiancé, Danny, there; and Dorothy is serving as her "chaperone" on the cross-Atlantic sailing. While Lorelei is going to be marrying well, she can't help but be on the lookout for diamonds; and while Dorothy strives to keep her out of trouble, she finds herself falling for the private investigator that Danny's father has hired to keep an eye on his potential daughter-in-law.This is an absolute classic among movie musicals -- with showstoppers like "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", "Bye Bye Baby", and "Isn't Anyone Here For Love" -- in eye-poppingly gorgeous Technicolor. Monroe is fabulous, but Russell really shines here. The duo are remarkable together, and anyone who loves a great musical should have this movie in their collection!

this is a movie movie
anyone who truly loves movies must love this film. it is what movies are all about. grand costumes, simple story, good music and songs, comical, and not only Marilyn Monroe, but jane Russell in probably her best film ever.....and the absolute pleasure in the great performances of some of the best character actors in the business. the director doesn't sit on his brain for a minute, but keeps the action going without a dull spot. yes...this is a movie. purely entertaining and removing all your problems for a little while. just enjoy

One Good Song not Worth it
It's a movie with Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. What's not to like? Plenty! The film hasn't aged well. Jane Russell is always gapping at men who are too young for her and Marilyn just wants any man with money. They break into song which just happens and doesn't move the plot forward. Jane is "the smart one" and based on her behavior she's pretty "dumb". She becomes enamored with a man because he's not Marilyn's or should I say Lorelei's type. It's a film for the 50's and maybe early 60's but don't waste your time. Watch Some Like It Hot instead.

YOU'LL PREFER THE BLU-RAY OF THIS CLASSIC
When you're feeling down in the dumps, a movie like GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (20th Century Fox, 1953) is a sure cure, especially when it's got two cheery gals like Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell in it to make you forget your troubles. They play a couple of showgirls on an ocean liner bound for Paris - Marilyn's trying to land a millionaire and Jane is her less material-minded pal. Merriment and mix-ups ensue before they end up at the altar with their respective Prince Charmings.Based on the Broadway hit by Anita Loos and directed by Howard Hawks, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES is a veritable showcase for its two leading stars, and is simply one of the most entertaining musical comedies of all time. Both ladies look absolutely stunning in those lush, '50s era Technicolor tones which are fully captured in Fox's fabulous Blu-ray edition. Marilyn's most iconic number, "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend", is a showstopper to be sure, and here it sparkles with a clarity that'll knock your socks off. The crystal clear audio is in 5.1 stereo and original mono and alternate Spanish and French languages with respective subtitles. The movie is formatted to its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. Extras include a Fox Movietone News: "Marilyn and Jane in Cement", the original trailer, and other Marilyn coming attractions.GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES is one of those movies that just seems to hit the spot at each viewing. It's sheer fun, and it captures that happy, carefree spirit of the '50s in a way few films do.Highly recommended.

Surprisingly modern, with some good gender-play
In some ways, some movies from the 1950s are more progressive than modern ones. Not only does "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" pass the Bechdel test in some ways, but it has a really brilliant choreographed musical number where a fully clothed Jane Russell is being backed up by a chorus line of almost-naked boyz.Lorelei and Dorothy are both really practical in their different ways. The plot is pretty much a farce (which I love). The musical numbers are a lot of fun- and "Diamonds are a Girl's Best friend" is iconic, both as a sentiment and as a visual. And, oh! the gorgeous CLOTHES!Now- one thing I do wonder- did DeBeers pay for product placement here? because they were doing a serious push to make diamonds be seen as intrinsically valuable starting in the 1940s, and this was filmed in 1953. For the record- diamonds are NOT especially valuable; if you want to invest in material goods, gold- and physical gold, not certificates- would be the way to go.

Smart and sexy
If one is a fan of Howard Hawks’s clever and fast directorial style found in films such as His Girl Friday, Ball of Fire, & the great western Red River, there’s no reason to not like this musical by the variety filmmaker starring two hot ladies of the golden era — Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell. Smiles, laughter, and falling on one’s knees over the two hot women is likely to happen for those who haven’t seen this flick and likely to happen again for those who’ve only seen this film once.

I've Gentlemen Prefer Blondes DVD
I've watched the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes last week and it was musical, spectacular & even the happy ending. My favorite scene is that Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell wearing their Red Sequin Dresses with their headpieces & I wish I could wear it one of these days.

Very well done and very entertaining.
Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell outdo themselves in this comedy. The singing is fun. Story line is fun. Great costumes. But, I paid WAY TOO MUCH for this DVD. Over $30.00. Thought because of the way the description was presented by the seller, it would contain additional information and scenes. It didn't. RIP-OFF!

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES from Fox Home Ent DVD
There are many DVD versions of this film with reviews all muddled up. That's OK if you just need to know about the film, but it can be confusing if you want to be sure about the quality. So my review is for the 20th Century Fox Home Ent DVD released 9 April 2012, with big pic of Marilyn (only) with her arms raised, and the incorrect billing off MM first then Jane. I admit to being a bit surprised at the 4.3 ratio (bars at both sides), when the reverse DVD cover plainly says 16.9 ratio, which, to me means it should fill the whole screen. However, 4.3 or not, this is a wonderful transfer, brilliant colour, crisp clear picture, slightly variable sound (the musical numbers), and good optional subtitles. No extras, but a terrific price (currently my copy £4.40). Howard Hawks was a muti talented director. This is the man who gave us "Red River", and this sparkiling, fun musical with both stars on top form. MM couldn't act to save her life here, but you can't keep your eyes off her. Sheer magic, and her song "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" surely ranks as one of Hollywood's great musical numbers/scenes. Speaking of songs/scenes..About 20 mins in there is the most wonderful, utterly camp number I can ever remember seeing...My wife and I actually laughed out loud it was so OTT...Jane dances and shimmies around 20 very fit nearly nude young men dressed in flesh coloured briefs. It has to be seen to be believed, and even then...At 87 minutes there isn't a dull moment. It's a shame that the 2 leading men are dull compared to the ladies, but any actor of the time (except perhaps for Mitchum) would have been hard pressed to compete. Russell or Monroe? Monroe or Russell. Two so different actresses and they compliment each other perfectly. Dated yes, but still great fun.
