USDA Organic. Quality turmeric. Exact curcumin content unknown.
I take a turmeric/curcumin supplement, and I sometimes add turmeric when cooking (great in stews and chili recipes). Studies have shown potential improvements in cholesterol levels, and possible brain and heart healthy aspects. Curcumin, the bioactive component in turmeric root, is an antioxidant, which makes it the much sought after component. This organic turmeric curcumin powder is offered as an extract with a 10:1 concentration. The product details states: "EXTRA STRENGTH TURMERIC: Our Organic Turmeric Curcumin powder is the only 10:1 extract on the market." So, yes it is extra strength turmeric, but that belies the intensity of the curcumin."All turmeric will contain at least some curcumin. But as mentioned earlier, the percentage can vary greatly. Turmeric from the Indian subcontinent is known to have a particularly high amount of curcumin. But the max is really around 7%. And on average around the world, it's around 3%." (online source). So, taking the average of 3%, and considering a 10:1 extract concentration, this powder might offer about 30% curcumin. Yes, this is considerable, and it could even be higher, depending on the actual turmeric source. However, my turmeric complex supplement contains turmeric root extract, standardized to 95% curcuminoids; 316mg of Turmeric Root Extract yields 300mg curcuminoids. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08CFRLQ3K)Now, this product offers over 200 servings, with 500mg/serving. The mentioned supplement has 65 capsules, 1 capsule/serving. To get about the equivalent amount of curcuminoids, you'd need to ingest 1 gram of this powder (2 servings).Maybe the math is a bit boggling, confusing. But, basically, you need to consume more of this powder to get the same quantity of curcuminoids. Depending on your personal taste will determine how much turmeric powder you'll want to add to your drink/smoothie. I would have no problem adding this to recipes, though. The product label does display the USDA Organic certification/badge, which checks off the quality control/assurance box.Based on these considerations, this turmeric powder garners a 3.75 - 4 star rating.

So is it ter-meric or too-meric?
In purchasing Turmeric you can't just look at the cost per oz because those ounces are not the same even in two products that say their only ingredient is "organic Turmeric." The key is in the extract ratio. XPRS Nutra Organic Turmeric Curcumin Powder has an extract ratio of 10:1. This means that 10 kg of raw herbs were extracted down to 1 kg of dried powdered extract. So this 4oz package of Turmeric started out as 40oz of Turmeric root. There is always an extract ratio and the higher the ratio the less of it you would need to consume to get the same benefit. Unfortunately, very few Turmeric sellers on Amazon list their extract ratio. At least the less expensive ones. However, you can get an idea of this by looking at the suggested serving size. The larger the suggested serving size, the lower the extract ratio. The active ingredient of Turmeric is curcumin. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a strong antioxidant. However, curcumin is not easily absorbed into your bloodstream. It helps to consume Turmeric with black pepper, which contains piperine. Piperine is a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000% (PubMed). Some (high priced) Turmeric supplements add piperine to make them more effective. Adding a little black pepper should have a similar effect. Curcumin is also soluble in fat. So it's a good idea to take Turmeric with a meal that’s high in fat.So, is it ter-meric or too-meric? I always used the latter but then when I started looking at the way it was spelled I thought maybe I had been pronouncing it incorrectly. I was much relieved to find out that according to Merriam-Webster and The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language both ter-meric and too-meric are acceptable. My friend, Ron, has been recommending Turmeric to me, and everyone else he meets, for years. I always politely listened to him tell me all about its benefits but I never actually tried it. So when I saw this, I decided it was time to take the plunge. Ron is in his early 70s and is a former NHL player who still does 1000 pushup everyday. Right or wrong, he credits much of his health to his daily intake of turmeric. So from my research it seems the health benefits are undeniable though they may vary from person to person. Most of the studies that are done use a Turmeric that has a very high extraction ratio and adds piperine which allows the cur cumin to be much more readily absorbed by the bloodstream. So I'll be mixing this Turmeric with a little black pepper and trying to consume around 1/4 tsp daily. The Turmeric does not really have much flavor but a little black pepper certainly livens it up a bit.
