something about a doll that is macabre, scary, has hints of terror
Where Ferrante begins -- all her novels explore the same themes. There is something about a doll that is macabre, scary, has hints of terror. This is a story in the classic tradition of dark stories for children that will terrify a child and also fascinate them. I recognise the doll and the story from the adult books, but this is from the doll's prespective. It made me examine the imagery and symbolism of doll. Not sure I'd read it to a young child, but perhaps it could open up a conversation with an older child.

A bit inappropriate for children
I am a big fan of Elena Ferrante, so I was excited to see what a children's book by her would look like. Unfortunately the language was a little vulgar for a children's book, perhaps because of translation. That being said, it did have beautiful illustrations and a dark twist on your typical kid's book.

Definitely Different
So I adore the books by Elena Ferrante and didn't know what to expect of a children's book written by Ms. Ferrante. The story and and illustrations are brilliant. My only reservation has to do with the language she uses. Some people may find some of the words she uses vulgar and not appropriate for a children's book. It may be due to the translation from Italian to English. Some passages were also very dark for a young child. Perhaps I'm old fashioned.

Ferrante for children
A lovely book by one of my favorite authors. I bought this one for my granddaughter and will probably buy another one for my other granddaughter. It's a nice gift book for a small child, one that will likely become a classic. I have to admit I censored some of the language for a 4 yr.old as I went along. Read through it before you read it to a child and you can judge what's appropriate for yours.

Too scary for younger children.
I loved this story, but it was way too scary for my grandchildren - aged 5 & 6.

may be a bit mature for children of certain age. But that may also be related to a certain puritanical temperament. Read before you start reading to a younger child.

I know this is meant to be a children's book and separate from EF's Neapolitan quartet but I couldn't stop associating the Mean Beach Attendant of Sunset as Don Sarratore...

Not for children
So weird! And definitely not for children. Creepy and dark

Disappointing
I love everything that this writer has had to offer and read it all with a sense of deep connection, but I'm afraid that I don't connect with this fantasy identification to a doll abandoned to the bad beach attendant and the elements. The metaphors don't seem meaningful to me,and I'm not sure who the readership is meant to be likely to relate to this illustrated story. I will be eagerly awaiting more elaborate in depth stories and characters from this writer who excels at conveying human experience with passion and honesty.

Not one for a very young child late at night
Bearing in mind that this is a book for children it bears some resemblance to a Grimm's Fairy Tale - not one for a very young child late at night, however by Elena Ferrante standards it has a happy ending.

Chilling and Haunting
This book is a picture book by Ferrante. It is also a children’s book (or so it seems). The Beach at Night is a deceptive book, that pretends to be a book for kids and can scare the bejesus out of you. It is a macabre story of a doll and has several hints of terror. This is told in the traditional sense of a fairy tale for kids, but goes deeper than that. The book is from the doll’s perspective (almost reminded me of the doll we meet in My Brilliant Friend) and has so much touches of darkness all throughout. It is as though all her books have the same theme – darkness, loneliness, and the idea to belong at some level. Although this book does have a happy ending, it still is peppered with a lot of dark imagery (though it is this small a book). I don’t even know if the book is for children really, but it definitely works for adults. In this one the translation itself might be limited, given the few use of words, but nonetheless it is done effectively to transport you to the world of Ferrante. Let me tell you something about the story. Celina the doll is jealous of the new kitten Minu. She gets lost along the way and somehow the story then reaches the beach. What happens next and the things that happen to her is what the book is about. The illustrations by Mara Cerri are so aligned to the story and are more than enough to create the atmosphere of loneliness and abandonment, thereby leading to the other darker themes of the short picture book. The Beach at Night is an unusual book, and yet hands down so fulfilling a read, the one that will haunt you for a while.

A fantasia gótica praiana de Elena Ferrante
A italiana Elena Ferrante escreve para crianças do mesmo jeito que escreve para adultos – com um olhar aguçado sobre as relações pessoais interconectadas com as relações sociais. Em seu THE BEACH AT NIGHT (Trad.
