I have had my journal for four days now and am ready to write my review. I have a journal obsession, with 3-5 journals actively being used at any given time. This is my first Midori style journal, and I must say that I am LOVING IT!THE PACKAGING – This journal kit was packaged fabulously! If you buy it as a gift to give in persion it is ready to wrap; and if you buy it as a gift to send straight from Amazon the box it comes in is perfect, being both simple and classic! I bought mine for myself and admired the box for a moment before digging into it. THE LEATHER – The first thing I did when I opened the box was to smell the leather. Having read all of the reviews and questions/answers I had heard some people complain of a smell. I put the leather right up to my nose, til it was literally touching my nose and smelled nothing. I didn’t smell any chemical odor as some reviews stated, nor did I smell leather aroma. It had absolutely no smell at all. The lack of leather aroma concerned me, but I think that was just a result of being packaged up, stored, then shipped, etc. because over the course of the past four days it has developed a wonderful leather aroma.The leather itself is just your basic leather, cut to shape with no stitching of any kind, and just the right measure of softness and floppiness.THE INSERTS – The inserts included in this kit are fantastic, I am absolutely in love with the paper! I use fountain pens quite a bit and in some of my other journals have struggled to find paper in the right size that didn’t have serious bleed through. The paper in these inserts is, in my opinion, and for my needs, perfect! The cover of each insert is very sturdy, plain brown cardstock that allows for whatever kind of decoration/personalization you want to do and will definitely stand up to the test of time.THE ZIPPER POUCH/CARD SLOT INSERT – Another quality item in this kit, the pouch/card insert is made of plastic that is both sturdy/durable and yet flexible enough not to cause issues when you close the journal. The zipper pouch must use TARDIS technology as it seems to be bigger on the inside! I have a mechanical pencil, a full size eraser, a 6” stainless steel ruler, a pack of 8 Mini Stabilo Fineliners, and a stencil in my zipper pouch.THE CARDBOARD FOLDER INSERT – Yet again this insert is made of quality cardstock that is very durable and should last quite a long time without issue. It is, like the insert covers mentioned above, plain brown cardstock, which allows to personalize it however you choose!THE PEN – I am a pen SNOB, and I am not ashamed.  I like this pen. The leather covered shaft with it’s crisp, clean white stitching is pleasing to the touch and the eye. I normally prefer silver to gold tones but the gold tone actually compliments the leather so well that I find I actually like it. As for writing, the pen writes very smoothly, appears to be a medium tip, and the blue ink flows very nicely across the pages.THE PEN CLIP – As mentioned in my notes on the pen, the gold tone of the clip compliments the leather very nicely, and the leather loop holds the pen perfectly. If you use thin shafted pens they would likely fall through the loop if they don’t have a clip to hold them in place. The clip itself does not quite grasp the leather tightly enough to stay put if you carry the journal in a bag where it gets jostled around. I have tried clipping it to the inserts instead and it does seem to stay attached to the inserts even after a day of bouncing around in my bag. I may have my boyfriend press the clip a little tighter so it grasps better, but this is a very, very minor detailTHE OVERALL JOURNAL KIT EXPERIENCE – I have been using my journal for four days now, carrying it with me everywhere I go. I bought a pack of extra elastics at the same time I bought this kit and they have come in handy as I have added an insert I already owned into the mix.I currently have the following secured in my journal:• zipper pouch/card slot insert (filled with a mechanical pencil, a full size eraser, a 6” stainless steel ruler, a pack of 8 Mini Stabilo Fineliners, and a stencil)• lined paper insert• plain paper insert• grid paper insert• one day per page May calendar insert I already owned• cardboard folder insertThis is a total of 6 inserts, 4 of them being notebook inserts at 30 sheets of paper each and the journal stays closed even when the elastic closure strap is not applied. And for one day I actually 5 notebook inserts comfortably inside the journal along with the folder and pouch inserts with no issue at all.I am THRILLED with this product! I am absolutely, positively in LOVE with it! And don’t even get me started on the price!  This kit is one of the best buys out there!

Love love love! Dupe for the official Travelers Company notebook! Soft leather, comes with 3 notebooks already placed inside, and a pen. I’m a fountain pen kinda girl, so I’ll probably give the enclosed pen to the hubs. This is affordable and would also be a great gift.

This set is so FABULOUS! The leather feels buttery soft & smells luxurious. My entire living room smelled like Wilson's Leather Store, which I loved. The included accessories would easily cost an additional $40+ (plus shipping!) for the Midori brand. However, these are just as gorgeous, functional, & durable. The paper is Goldilocks great- not so thin that inks bleed or ghost yet not stiff either. The included pen is comfortable to hold, writes very well, & is also refillable. What a timeless gift! The kraft paper folder is perfect for receipts, tickets, etc. The vinyl pocket is super handy for paper clips, post-it notes, money, etc. FYI: their vinyl DOESN'T have a horrid plastic-y odor like many vinyl items these days. I ordered 2 as gifts but will immediately reorder because I couldn't resist keeping one for myself! This will definitely be my go-to gift for Christmas as well as birthdays. My order arrived AHEAD of schedule & packed well. It comes in a handy kraft paper box that makes gift wrapping easy. The notebook arrives already "put together" & ready to use. Note: There was a very SMALL mark/scrape on the front cover from the clip/pen holder but that's to be expected with leather this supple. I didn't mind this at all because I'm actually looking forward to scuffing mine a la Indiana Jones. :-) BOTTOM LINE: This set is worth every cent, folks- I can't say enough about it! You'll be quite pleased with it regardless whether you're a lifelong journalist or new to the world of travellers notebooks. Or just looking for an amazing gift for almost any occasion! Yes it seems like you are back about 100 years in time! The quality and physical feel of this product is that good! You can rearrange order and add or subtract the plain unlined, lined and square grid (yes you do receive a plastic zipper insert but that took away from the "feel" I was looking for) also you receive a cardboard stock "Card Holder." This last item does more than hold business cards. It can hold notes, small photos (4x8 inches). This item keeps the feel and look I enjoy.The paper refills are a little on the thin side, not poor quality, just too thin. Probably 20 pound stock paper. That is normal. I buy 24 pound for my printing needs and note book paper too. As such I accustom to heaver paper use.As such, I also purchased Pencil Board Shitajiki for Traveler's Notebook. If you do not know, that item is used to put behind the page you are writing on. It adds two things. 1. you have guidelines to write or draw from, or reject if you do not require them. It is not distracting. 2. you have writing a board that also stops you from indenting the next pages. It is useful with this Leather Journal from Sovereign-Gear.Now the bad.They really need to shorten this items name. simply calling it a Travelers Journal would be far better.The pen clip works great. The pen may look good, but it is a mass production, non refillable pen. I personally tossed it out. And I bought a Fisher Space Pen "Bullet Space Pen" with Clip. It fits the pen clip that the Leather Journal Refillable Travelers Notebook comes with. I have used these for decades! I love them.Yes, yes it is not what Mark Twain or Eger Alan Poe would have used! Oh well...

Firstly the notebook itself. It is gorgeous. The leather is a beautiful even colour, wonderfully smooth, thick and built to last, but with just enough softness to feel great in the hand. I can already tell how beautifully it’s going to age.The notepad inserts are the usual mix of plain — always my preference — ruled and grid, all good quality paper that takes a fountain pen really well: an essential, as far as I’m concerned. But it also works well with my second favourite writing implement, a Faber-Castell Grip Plus 07, for when I want a smooth writing performance that I can erase if I need to, and for quick, simple notes where a fountain pen would feel (but not actually be) too slow.The one part of the package I wasn’t expecting much from was the pen. Generally speaking when you get a pen as an extra you don’t expect it to be anything but cheap and probably only worth shoving in a drawer for the next time one of your kids loses theirs, or to grab to make a quick note when the guy or gal on the phone wants to give you a lengthy and complex reference number. And they’re certainly never good enough to hang on to, or even to give as a stocking filler present. Well I won’t be shoving mine in any drawer, nor will I be passing it on to anyone. It’s a sturdy, well-made pen, with enough weight and substance in the hand to feel excellent quality.But what really astonished me was the smoothness of how it writes. I gave up using ball points as soon as roller ball pens came in because cheaper ball points were always either lacking enough ink flow, so scratchy on the paper’s surface, and certainly no pleasure to use, or else they were overflowing with under-regulated kink, they left blotches as one wrote. This pen has neither of those faults. I wish I knew where to get a refill because it has quite reconciled me to using ball point pens. It’s now my implement of choice for writing in my notebook wile my fountain pen lies discarded a d drying up.And the bonus, for me, was the ink colour. A deep blue-black, instead of the cheap looking bright blue inks that less elevated implements tend to use. Okay, it’s not a Mont Blanc, and personally I could do without the stitching feature. But still, a really solid, useful pen, a perfect addiction to the notebook collection.All-in-all this is an excellent example of these almost ubiquitous travellers’ systems, thoigh with much better quality leather than my previous, smaller (passport size), one, with a surprisingly impressive quality of accompanying pen.So much for the notebook and components, what about customer service?The customer service was first rate. Flawless. As impeccable as the product itself. My notebook had arrived without the pen holder or the inserts, either the Kraft paper one or the one with the zippered pouch. I contacted the seller via Amazon and within 48 hours I had not only received all three of the missing items but a complemented planner notebook to add to the existing three. Again, there was obvious quality in the leather and brass of the pen holder, both far better than one I had previously had with the smaller notebook.Further, these item were accompanied by a charming letter — hand signed in ink — thanking me ‘for giving us the chance to put things right’.Now, that, folks is how to do customer service. It’s so simple to do yet so few companies seem to bother with four simple components:1. thank the customer for drawing attention to the issue;2. put it right (or grovel if you can’t put it right and ask the customer how they want to proceed from there until they’re satisfied));3 add a little ‘sweetener’ of some kind (or a very generous one of you really can’t put it right)and — as important as all of these4. make the customer feel they’ve been heard and helped by a real live human being who cares about their buying experience, and not just a squiggled ‘signed’ or unsigned automated letter.So few companies of any size seem to know, care about or practice these four simple rules that it’s a genuine pleasure to deal with one which does.Would I buy from this company again? In the proverbial heartbeat (or as many as I have left!)Would I recommend them to a friend? Absolutely.I’d even recommend them to an ‘enemy’, because even bad guys and gals are entitled to decent stationer and good service. Besides, using fine quality tools might sweeten their natures and make them take a sunnier view of life, and other humans.Well. One can only hope!
