My first time cleaning/replacing quartz tube and wanted to have a spare on hand... and here's how I did it
Shipping a fragile quartz tube to Hawaii... what can go wrong? Nothing! The fragile tube showed up well packaged and undamaged. In case you were wondering why you need a quartz sleeve (I use the term tube, because that's what it is), regular glass blocks 95% of UV light. Quartz glass lets UV pass right through it. So there you have it. You have a UV bulb (also made of quartz glass) and you need a tube to separate it from the water, so you need a quartz tube. The Sterilight manual is kinda vague about cleaning the quartz tube, but does identify hard water (usually well water) as the culprit requiring cleaning the tube. Dirty tube=blocked UV=less effective system=live microorganisms in your water. Since my water is rain catchment, I skipped cleaning the tube for the first annual UV bulb replacement because rain is distilled water and has no minerals, and you should have at the minimum a 5 micron filter prior to the UV light. I should have skipped two years.I was afraid of damaging or breaking the tube during cleaning so I bought a new tube so that I would always have a spare. $50 is cheap insurance versus not being without water until I could get a replacement quartz tube. After being used for 730 days the old tube looked pretty much like the new one. Hence I won't be cleaning/replacing the quartz tube again until 2017.Replacing the UV light is fast and easy, cleaning/replacing the tube is more involved. If you are on well water, you probably have to do this annually. If you are on rain catchment and don't have a concrete tank, you can probably do it every 3 years, as mentioned above. It doesn't help that the instructions from Sterilight are intentionally vague so that it covers many different types of models. I won't go into the procedures here because your model might be different than mine, but one thing that is probably universal is that nobody can insert a quartz tube perfectly straight so that it magically finds the hole on the bottom. There is a lot of play inside of the reaction chamber. It helped to insert a finger into the bottom of the chamber with one hand to find the tube while inserting the tube through the top with the other. Much easier than randomly moving the tube around through the top opening while trying to figure out why its not coming out the bottom. One thing I really appreciated about this purchase is that the quartz tube arrived with a spare spring and 2 O-rings. The spare spring is essentially just in case you lose the original during the switch you don't have to panic. The spring sits on the bottom of the reaction chamber and saves your UV light if you accidentally drop it down there. The O-rings hold your tube in place and keep the water out. It was nice that the rings were included instead of getting nickel and dimed for a separate purchase like so many companies want to do nowadays.

Great quartz UV tube
This is a great replacement or extra tube for your uv system. It is high quality and comes well packed. It makes it a lot easier to changean extra tube than to have to clean the existing one and get it back into the system.
