Essential In Any Music Collection
Miriam Makeba's nickname was "Mother Africa" and "Pata Pata" is her cross-over album from the 1960s that made her famous world-wide. In addition to traditional South African songs, Makeba sings a few English ballads (which are good, but its the South African music that makes the cd). She truly has one of the widest ranging recorded female voices and any listener will want to hear this cd multiple times. I gave this cd 4 stars instead of 5 because I see the English songs as a distraction. However, it is still is a must have.

Pata Pata - Miriam Makeba
She was from Johanasburg. Her style was different and exciting. I heard her first when she recorded for RCA and famous for the "Click Song". Pata Pata is also very good and exciting to listen to. I recommed it.Sincerely,John, from San Antonio, Texas

As talented as Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee or Rosemary Clooney
I had never heard of Miriam Makeba until I learned of her though Professor John McWhorter who referred to her on a set of great courses CDs on the history of human language. She was interesting linguistically because of her native "click" language. This album; in fact, contains her "Click Song". What I discovered was an incredibly talented singer. After reading about her life I discovered what an great person she was. From modest beginnings in South Africa she became not only a remarkable singer, but a civil rights activist affectionately called "Mama Africa". She died in 2008 respected and beloved.

Pata Pata
Miriam Makeba was an amazing singer. I love the title song, and the rest of the tracks are just beautiful. The spirit she put in her music is such that I get carried off to far away places ever time I listen to it. I just love it.

Lighthearted and fun
Ms. Makeba's voice and melodies are rich and intriguing. Sometimes for me her voice evokes shades of Edith Piaf and Earta Kitt. Ms. Makeba though, is a force of nature and captivated me on this album. The intricate voices and rythmns are joyful and they caught me up into them.

What a voice!
I am so sorry that I had no idea about Miriam Makeba's extraordinary talent until she died. An obituary in the Economist sent me to Amazon to buy this CD, and I was enthralled. She has the range and lush gorgeousness of Ella Fitzgerald, with an African energy (and ability to click!) all her own. I am staggered and delighted. Listen and be amazed.

Great Rythmns
Great to listen to, or just as back ground music. Bought it after hearing the title track on radio, never having heard of her before; so didn't know what to expect. Not disappointed. Good variety, lovely voice, good songs.
