well written on an important topic
I love Candice Brathwaite. Period. Moreover, her quitting is inspiring to me as a young Caribbean woman who is a gender specialist and creative who has lived in different countries. It is interesting and disappointing to see the similarities between the treatment of black mothers, black women in general and black families in the US where I have lived and in the UK where I have never been. It is not surprising however and I hope that this book serves to inform all readers and spark change for the better.

Hugely Readable - Vitally Important
Brathwaite takes us through her own experiences as an unmarried black woman expecting her first baby and the prejudices she experiences both from within her own culture and the expectations upon her, and without, from the medical profession and through the lens of white privilege and racism. Not only is this a personal journey but each chapter is headed by research into the experiences of black mothers and the statistics are horrifying. Brathwaite takes great care to use her own story to shine a light on the wider picture and the inequality she uncovers is staggering. This is righteously angry, gloriously passionate and fierce in her commitment to make a space for herself and her family and by extension her community without having to apologise or fit in with what is expected of her. It's a tremendous read.

Absolutely wonderful
I loved this book. Candice has a great way of communicating and sharing her experience as a black british mother.

Breathtakingly honest and open glimpse into motherhood
This book is so important on so many levels. Being seen, feeling represented and feeling a sense of belonging are basic human needs and rights and yet there is STILL an overwhelming number of very similar offerings to expectant/new mothers. Candice offers her experience, opinions and hopes in one of the most honest and beautifully worded books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I cried A LOT reading this book and was filled with hope by the end. There is a lot of work to do and I for one am energised and ready to keep working towards that future where equality isn't just a wishful thinking buzz word but a reality. Thank you for writing this gift of a book Candice. I can't wait to see what you do next... No pressure though!

Eye-opening and absolutely captivating
I pre-ordered this book because I’ve always found Candice Brathwaite’s content/words/stories so incredibly captivating and real that I couldn’t wait to consume an entire book. And true to form, I read this book in two days. I’m not black, British, nor a mother and I couldn’t put it down. Candice’s depiction of motherhood and the way she tells her story (and that of many others) in such a poignant yet almost poetic way makes this my favorite read in a long time. It was eye opening and a must read for anyone who wants a hard dose of reality mixed with the kind of storytelling that draws you in so much so that you don’t want it to end, as painful as it can sometimes be.
