Good as ever
I got this in anticipation of a trip to Barcelona, so I can't comment on how well it chooses the right highlights. What I can say is that this is up to the usual DK standard. Clearly set out and nicely illustrated. I have always been impressed when I have used DK guides elsewhere and I expect this will be the same.

Great informative useful travel guide
I went to Barcelona about 20 years ago and still have my old DK Eyewitness book from this visit. I would love to go back and re-explore the city. I have been using DK Eyewitness travel books for planning holidays for many years now and I have quite a collection now. They are so informative and useful. I always use DK guides in the planning stages as I think that they point you in the right direction of what to see and do, and are packed full with information, pictures and maps. This is a DK Eyewitness book about Barcelona and Catalonia. The front cover is a pull out map of the Barcelona area. This book is split into 3 sections, Discover, Explore and Need to Know. It provides information on the different areas of Barcelona and what to do, see and explore in each of them. It has information on the history of the area, where to eat, where to shop, everything you can think of. In the back there is another fold out map of Barcelona, which can be removed and put in a bag or pocket. This book is a great size to take away with you, packed with so much information, pictures and ideas. It is a good overall guide, which will point you in the right direction of places to visit. I usually use a guide like this to get ideas then research things on the internet. A great guide perfect for planning your next holiday at a reasonable price. Currently priced at £9.79, this is actually less than I paid for my old book all those years ago.

Structurally not the best DK guide.
First of all, I am a fan of DK travel guides - I like the photos, illustrations, concise narratives, it is what you need in a guide book. This one is OK, but it is not the best. The problem is essentially the structure of the book. The clue is in the title of the book, "Barcelona and Catalonia". Although Barcelona is in Catalonia, it dominates it as the capital and largest city. Many of the sights are within easy reach of each other is best explored using on foot and through the use of public transport. To explore the rest of Catalonia, you essentially need a car, although some places are accessible by train. Therefore 'Barcelona' and 'Catalonia outside the capital' need to be treated separately.Unfortunately, the first section of the book entitled 'Discover', it is all jumbled together - thus you can have an article on the centre of Barcelona on the same double page spread as one on a gorge up in the North together with another on a beach on the Costa Brava. The main chunk in the middle of the book is on the city of Barcelona itself - which I don't really have a problem with, although I haven't actually used it as our trip arranged for Spring 2020 was cancelled due to Covid. The final section of 36 pages [before 'Need to know'] is left for the rest of Catalonia. Sadly, this is all too brief and it is not at all clear where the different places are unless you look at the one map at the start of the section. There are plenty of places outside the capital which deserve greater attention than they have received in this book.** Note that this is a genuine independent review from someone who bought the book to take with them on a forthcoming holiday. Unlike some other reviewers here, I paid for this product. **

Nicely illustrated, full o fine details of the city, includes a map, and easy to read
DK Eyewitness Barcelona and Catalonia: inspire, plan, discover, experience (Travel Guide)This is a nicely illustrated and informative travel guide to Barcelona and Catalonia. This book gives you a brief but precise must-see and must-experience in these cities. It tells about its history, a year-round calendar of festivals and holidays, and a suggested itinerary to maximise your experience. DK never fails to provide the best reads about anything under the sun. Recommendable.

New design, but still such a good travel guide
Even though I am a huge fan of DK Eyewitness travel guides, I haven’t purchased one in the last 4-5 years. This one from Barcelona surprised me for its redesign. Pages aren’t so glossy as they used to be but this is not a deal breaker for me because the guide is packed with beautiful photos, the usual diagrams of important buildings and suggested walks around the city. It also has new features like hotels and restaurants suggestions grouped by attractions/ zones and also some detailed plans for discovering the city in 1, 3 and 5 days. The Catalonia section is also very interesting, with lots of details and suggestions of the zone.

Has up to date information on Barcelona attractions
Guide covers the main attractions. I didn't find it well structured and information about the places wasn't very detailed. Opening times were accurate and one of the few tips for an off the beaten track cafe was good, would have liked more tips.

So so
Most of what's in here you can learn at on line travel blogs.

Waste of your Money!
DK used to make excellent tourist booklets. Now, in the Internet age it seeks to explain nothing (no history, background, etc.) but automatically shunt you to the “www…” link.Wow! That was valuable! These sites (especially applicable to Barcelona!) are a confused mess unlike we have encountered anywhere else in Europe. Hours wrong, days of opening or closing often incorrectly posted. DK should provide real information from travelers experiences here, such as beware this government’s site, it is often incorrect and not updated in a timely manner.Bottom line, these guides in years past in conjunction with the web helped research your trip on several different levels. Now it is just a bunch of photos (yes, DK always had attractive photos) but zero substance to assist with the historical background and experiences that you may encounter.Save your money. Like an old print newspaper it is another formerly reliable source for knowledge eclipsed and made obsolete by their own lackadaisical efforts to redress the imbalances which the web brings to timely information.
