It didn't work anywhere near as well as I expected. We have 16 zones of sprinklers and all of the heads in one zone were "leaking", which told me that the valve was sticking open. The sprinkler system is old and wasn't mapped out, so we had no idea where the valves and lines were. I thought this would be a perfect solution. I hooked the transmitter to the wires for the faulty zone. I was able to follow the wire down the wall to the ground, but it was very difficult to follow it beyond that. Rather than a squealing, there was an almost imperceivable change in the static. We had already dug up one portion of the water line and wire. Even holding the receiver near the exposed wire, it was hard to get a squeal unless it was pointed just right (and that wasn't directly towards the wire). I finally found the valve about 10 feet further away than where the unit indicated.

I bought this product for my father and he really seems to like it and says that it works beautifully. The reasons why I give this product only 3 stars is 1. because of packaging: The product arrived in a padded envelope along with corner brace brackets that I ordered. I felt like this was not a safe way to transport such an item to prevent damage. while the brackets tore out of their package and were in the process of tearing through the envelope, the wire locator was luckily not damaged although the package was squished.2. because I had to return and reorder the first wire locator that I ordered because the first one was malfunctioning.

Don't need this type of tool often, but it is priceless when needed. This wire locator is not expensive and works great.

Worked great for locating underground cable that was not energized. Could not get the depth of the cable, but that was not important to me.

Nice to have item in toolbox. Worked great for buried cable up to about 190ft, and not so good through pvc conduit, which could be operator error.
