Linear Expressions - Pat Martino

Excellent insight into Pat Martino’s style!
You need to memorize his licks for certain chords. Must apply to tunes you know.

Major Technological breakthrough in Jazz Improvisation SPECIFICALLY for Guitar !
Words alone can't describe the incredible value in Pat Martino's technique, and the fact that he was willing to share his invention with the public at large is a nothing less than gift to humanity !! thank you Pat ! I learned the guitar for few (approx. 3) years, this was 50-years ago, and always knew I will come back to it one day. This one day was 6 months ago. The instructional method I receive 50-years ago, as far chord progression, inversion, and substitution goes, is very similar to what Pat is teaching (the nature of guitar), but I only "graduated" learning all of it on the first 4 string of the guitar (4,3,2,1) and just began moving on to the 5,4,3,2, >>6,5,4,3, and finally 6,4,3,2 (which is one of the most popular jazz rhythm chord formation) with few exceptions . Therefore, the parental chord forms (again I am jumping to Pat's the 'Nature of Guitar' = a master piece) derivation from augmented and dimished forms into major, minor, M7, and m7flat5, and the periodicity and extensions were already known to me but taught in a different way yet (in a similar way perhaps like the German's Weizmann, Carl Friedrich, book from 1853, and Guy Capuzzo article from 2006 about Pat Martino technique, as my teacher was from Romania). What I never learned methodically is jazz improvisation ! I was looking for a way to get into it which will pave some sort of a short cut, or an easy entry level, like one would expect from a computer hacker (-:). Obviously, learning and knowing all the notes of the guitar neck, all the scales and their modes, the arpeggios for every single chord, and then applying all of this to improvise on-the-fly, would work, but the learning curve is very very slow ! What Pat Martino has done, is ( a short cut, without compromising quality !) reducing the learning curve time, by a factor (I can only guess at this time) of 5 to 10. Immediately instilling confident in the the (fresh jazz) player, and build a methodology, a system, for a long life growing with jazz improvisation. The internal value of this booklet should be 10 to 20 folds higher ( so don't let its low cost decieves you). This book is one of the best gift I've got in my life !

Great study aid for the aspiring jazz guitarist
I also enjoyed the book. The lack of tab was a nuisance, but we should be sight reading anyway (ahh... I take that back, if there was an edition with tab I missed it.) Another gripe would need to be the lack of conformity with the activities. Activity one should be different then activity two, Mr. Martino explains that each activity relates to a different position of the g minor scale. For some reason I was just wishing that activity one would remain unchanged for each new section. This is not a big deal, in fact I am just too obsessive compulsive. You shouldn't repeat the activities in your performance note for note anyway. I did memorize each activity and then wonder where he was getting the new notes when he moved on to another level and wrote that he was using activity no. 3 (e.g.) I did, however, hope that he would bring that up to conclude the book. Mr. Martino has givin the reader an activity for any miner scale in five different positions on the guitar neck. You should memorize the activities, but... embellish a little, and use the activities as substitutes relating to different minor, major, dominant, etc. harmonies. It's short, but it does give you plenty to work with. I do recommend it.

This book connects melodic lines across the entire fingerboard.
With five simple diagrams, this book answered questions, regarding the relationship of melodic patterns on the fingerboard, that I've been looking for, for years. It's the best book I've found in a long time (and there have been many); I wish I found this twenty years ago.

Fantastic Resource
This book is a blessing. To learn the guitar well, is to systematically study the fundamentals. It's important, but can be boring. Pats book isn't boring at all. Using melodic long lines consisting of various very cool motifs strung together in a single position, Pat has provided a perfect vehicle to learn the guitar and jazz at the same time. Each scale position on the guitar has material using the same scale but with different motifs. Each one is 5 measures of music, so they are pretty easy to learn and not at all boring like scale exercises often are. Once you get these under your fingers, it's easy to transfer motifs from one position to another. Analyze the voice leading to see the types of sounds you like. Learn to start any portion of 1 or 2 measures on different beats. Try modifying the straight eight not rhythms. Highly recommended!

Good, advanced
Historically, I have mostly played by ear, and using some petatonic scale patterns I discovered years ago. The past few years my goal has been learning the fret board, scales, notes, etc. My teacher uses the caged system. Ive heard yays and nays about this. But using this system the emphasis, seems to be major scales . When we looked at linear expressions, the scale patterns are about the same, only approaching tthe scale pattern from the relative minor. Then you get the kicker. Pats exercises. WOW. My teacher had to work to play them, I couldnt. But in time? The first page with minor 7th inversions my teacher said are not necessarily standard jazz figerings, but are a good exercise

Essentiel !

Un must have
