For me, learning coding was not easy, but this book helped.
My school started half the students in Visual Basic, which was especially challenging as an adult student with no prior coding experience. My first semester was kind of a nightmare, and without my husband I might not have made it. The second semester was still difficult, but better, and this book helped a lot with that. It has a much simpler format than the first semester's book, and I really appreciated that when studying. It was also really easy to look up subjects from the index, which has not always been the case for me with other books for my degree. Hopefully this review helps other beginning students grappling with VB.

This is a solid book.
This book, like most of Murach's books, is well written, clear, and plenty of practical examples that are often based off of real world problems that programmers are asked to solve every day. I am still working through this book but I am sure that after I am done reading this book I will be keeping it handy to use as a reference for future programs that I will write.

Great book for learning VB.net
I have found this book to be excellent for an absolute beginner to learn VB.net. I have purchased several books now on this subject. This book and Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 2010 in 24hrs are my 2 favorites. This book has great examples and I find the way it is written to be very conducive to learning quickly. I am about 2/3rds of the way through this book and it has helped me immensely as I was struggling for a while, but I now feel that I am getting somewhere.

ADO topics could have been better
I was a VB 6.0 coder and just trying to learn VB.NET. There was no example using SQL statements (INSERT,UPDATE,ETC.). The ADO part could have been better if SQL database is used using SQL statements instead of XML files. Now I have to buy ADO.NET book just to see how it is done using SQL statements. But overall its ok if you come from VB 6.0 background and learn VB.NET. I like the format of the book (theory on the left, example on the right.)

great way into VB
Having programmed in Basic and C long before everything became "visual" and object oriented, this book is a great help to get back into the programming world. Downloading the samples for each chapter provide a running start with true hands-on approach. enough information to get started and jump right in. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to start programming from scratch or who's just a bit rusty (like myself) and wants to jump back into the programming world.

Not for the absolute beginner, but great for a BEGINNER
Nice book..its not for absolute beginners. Murachs teaches in a way that requires you to think without the computers guidance. It works by giving you the solid rules for VB...take an upper level math course if you dont understand the text in this book.

Excellent Instruction in Visual Basic 2010
I had resisted the upgrade from VB6 to the later .Net versions until now. I've relied on prior texts by Murach during my VB6 days and this book is no different. It is a well written text that not only clearly highlights the enhancements of VB 2010, but also smoothes the upgrade path for procrastinators like myself. This book is worth three times the price. Nice job Murach and team.

Really thick book that cover a lot of information on Visual Basic. A bit outdated by now, but gets the job done.
