Lightroom book that tells you WHY and HOW the software works
I am not a new Lightroom user as I have had the product since version 2, but I found this book to be very enlightening. The level of detail is very good as are the explanations of how and why things work in this software. I have actually read it, cover to cover, and noted and underlined the contents ;-).I think this book may be a better fit for a.) people who want to 'really' understand Lightroom and b.) those who are willing to study a little. The software is billed as easy to use but it can be confusing especially for people with no background or understanding of databases. The chapters on the import and library functions are detailed and provide answers to the 'Why do I need a database? I have folders', kind of questions. Again, this book provides good detail for even such things as handling multiple catalogs! If you are a new user and want to open the box and get going, Scott Kelby's books are quick to read and easy to understand. However, if you need to get more information 'Photoshop Lightroom 5 Streamlining Your Digital Workflow' might be the book for you.

Outstanding
This is the 3rd Lightroom book I own that is authored by Nat Coalson; this is probably THE top after-market book that describes how to use the entire functionality of this software, I've read others but this book beats them all. Comprehensive, it covers every aspect of the software - Well-organized with excellent illustrations/photographs and screen shots that are seemingly always placed right next to the text you're reading, no flipping back and forth from page to page to look at figures/photos, etc......it's all right there where you are reading and this makes it just that much better in terms of being able to stay focused on learning the multitude of functions available in Lightroom 5. Buy this book, you'll use it as a ready reference and won't need to do much additional windshield time on the web watching videos and the like, great tool.

Defective merchandise
The first 42 pages of this instruction book are missing. How can I begin to learn the computer program if 42 pages of the basic introduction material are missing? The book must have been inspected before or during packaging. The employee that did this should be fired. As an update to this review, I should say that Greshambooks very quickly agreed to a complete refund to me. I am upgrading to 4 stars.

Recommended but…
A comprehensive and well written and illustrated guide to Lightroom 5. Starting with the first version of Lightroom and now up to LR5, I find that Rob Sylvan and Nat Coalson's book could be a bit intimidating for the a first time user of LR. However, this book is a great reference for someone who is somewhat familiar with LR and want to use LR to its fullest potential in their post-processing. I do photo and post-processing workshops and like to recommend resources. Overall, I would recommend this book. Wish I could give this publication 4.5 stars.

Not all change is for the better
This book is well organized, whether you are using it to learn LR 5 or as a quick reference. Although I have been a Lightroom user since it was first introduced, this book showed me new and more direct ways of editing and organizing my work.As Adobe has just released its last stand-alone version of the software, LR 6, I hope Sylvan can find a way to update us with the new features. Perhaps as an addendum. These pay-as-you-go software plans are not my cup of tea. As I have limited Internet access at my location, I can't see paying a monthly (or annual) fee for access to Adobe.

with some good illustrations. Unfortunately
Quite a helpful book, with some good illustrations. Unfortunately, like so many books of this type, it tries to teach the reader the basics of photography as well as how to use Lightroom. It would have been a much better book if it had concentrated on how to use the program, and directed the reader to other books on photography basics.

A big book
So far this appears to be an ideal source for the entire info on the increasingly complex Lightroom. Nice to have all in one place and the author suggestion to have the text rebound in wire or plastic seems a good one as the book is heavy and rebinding would allow it to lay flat. As far as I have read the author offers a very straight forward well researched presentation. Would suggest this one as "excellent".

A Must For Streamlining Your Workflow
This book thoroughly explains many of the basic and advanced details of Lightroom. I especially liked learning about how cataloging is approached. Especially useful for intermediate to advanced Lightroom users.

Really helping with a mamoth task
I decided to go with Lightroom to organise my 2 TB+ of images rather than the Bridge latch-on that comes with Photoshop 6 or use Elements. As I tinkered with Lightroom 4, Adobe brought out version 5. I upgraded and I then researched a support book for my Kindle Fire to help me. It was great being able to download samples to try from Amazon. These served their purpose but always were the very beginnings of the book which includes (and wastes in a sample) effusive thanks to all who helped but it did clearly show if there were accompanying images to use in learning and experimentation. I even borrowed one of my secondary choices for a couple of weeks and, after perusing that one, I headed straight for Mr Rob Sylvan! He is a new author to me so this book is new and not a re-hash, re-write of a Lightroom 4 book. I find it clear and extremely helpful. The bookmarking and note system in Kindle books is a great asset as it removes the need for extra notepads and sticky bit of paper indexing important points. The flow is good and the accompanying practice files are a very good asset. It is clear that Rob knows his stuff and a Kindle is easily propped by the side of my computer to act as a continuing reference. I am thoroughly satisfied and believe that I made the best choice and was very grateful for the way Amazon enabled me to browse and choose - hooked on a new system for technical advice, on to Lightroom for making the best of my pictures and on to Rob as a new author to provide insight and guidance.Chris Baldwin

The best reference guide
I tried several other Lightroom 5 guides before this one. The others were all helpful in getting me going, but as a fully indexed reference guide this one is by far the best. Anytime I have a query I check the index, find the relevant section and follow the instructions. It would probably be a little heavygoing as an introductory text, but once you have the basics in place, this is the book to keep alongside your computer on your desk.

Reference for Adobe Lightroom
Once upon a time... every software used to have a (huge) printed user manual; nowadays you are lucky if you can have some kind of e-doc (or at least a user forum). This books fills in the gap, explaining both the basics and the author's best practices of Lightroom 5. Eventually I found myself that I already knew 75% of the topics, but the remaining part was really worth the price.Suggested!
