VERY cost effective for occasional use
I picked this unit up to do a final tune on a Tecumseh 8 HP.I usually work on older V8;s .. so this was a little new.The unit functions well.. no complaints at all. BUT, I agree with one of the other reviewers... the instructions have much to be desired. Being a V8 guy, 01RPM, 02RPM, and 03RPM do not have immediate meaning to me. To give this item a five star review, all the manufacturer would have to do is add a simple chart to the instructions for the meaning of 01RPM, 02RPM, and 03RPM. The cost to do this would be near zero.

Wildly different readings
Horribly unreliable because it gives some wildly different readings. The clip seems to give the most stable reading, but I am not sure if it's an accurate reading given that there's multiple different readings depending on the way it is connected.Wrapping the wire around the spark plug cable gives a different reading depending on where it's wrapped and how many times, even with 5 wraps.Putting the tach itself next to the spark plug is useless because the reading changes depending on distance. The instructions say 3 to 5cm but when I measured it and put it at 3cm I get different reading than at 5cm.So yeah..buy at your own risk. I'll probably return this or buy a different higher quality tach and see which method is accurate.

Mode setting is anyone's guess.
I wanted to know the running rpms of my chainsaw. I am not confident about the device readings. There are no clear instructions regarding the "mode" setting. I've experimented with it, but the difference from one "mode" to another is not obvious. Also, the spark plug wire clip has a wire attached to it with no plug or terminal. The measuring unit has a tab with two holes. Should I loop the wire in one hole and out the other? Again - no instructions.

Accurate to within 10 rpms
This was very accurate within 10 rpm, tested it against a $500 rpm tester. This was easy to use just clip it to the spark plug wire once the engine is running and warmed up. The price is cheap for what you receive, this review is my own opinion from the actual results I obtained. I don't buy things based upon other peoples experiences but like I said my results were positive.

Only 3 RPM Modes
RPM Modes can only be set to 3 different modes, even though the product description shows a table with 9 modes. The instructions do not describe the modes only how to move between mode 1,2 and 3. From the questions section on amazon I believe that Mode 01 is 1P1R - 4 stroke 2 cylinder/2 stroke 1cylinder. Mode 02 is 1P2R 4 stroke 1 cylinder. And Mode 03 is ?????? no where to be found. It does seem to read RPM well if you either hold the body at the spark plug or clamp the clamp to the spark plug. The spark plug wire does not give a good enough signal.
