Better Houseware Grapefruit Knife, Stainless Steel

Q: I just bought this knife as a little gift for a friend; I didn't know there was an additional piece attached to the back of the knife, so now I'm not sure about giving it. Can anyone tell me what this is for, and if it causes any problems?

I believe it's a thumb rest to give you greater control and accuracy. Incidentally this knife works really well with removing defective bananas from within a hand, or hands from a stalk of bananas.

The blade is about 4 inches. The serrated part is about 2.5 inches. The pointed part has bend in it at about .75 inches to cut the under part of the grapefruit.

Q: Where were these manufactured?

I don't know but it is hard to imagine that they are made anywhere but China. They are good quality though.
