Lovely, simple reference for most hair types and desired styles
This book is a great little reference to get the basics down for many popular looks for most hair lengths. I'd definitely suggest giving it a read before you go to your stylist! I like edgy, textured yet polished layers in my shoulder length locks. When I asked my stylist for all those layers, I was still working with the mentality of "somehow by the grace of God this will look good after a curling iron / flat iron." In most cases, it did due to the mercy of some higher power, I'm convinced of it. While I still need that mercy, after reading the book I have a strategy that works and can be evolved for all my basic looks. But, now that I know that, a few less layers would have been a good thing!! As Kendall Farr drives home in "The Pocket Stylist," make sure you know what the real effort is for upkeep on a style before you get the cut. I love working on my hair, but last night's effort from shampoo to finish look took about 3 hours. Fortunately, it is a style that will wear well for several days.

Not what we were looking for
From the cover, we were expecting 85 great hairstyles that our clients could look in deciding new looks, or event styles. This book had no so up to date looks or hairdos. We have it on our counter and have not had one client look at it past the first few pages. Clients have stated it was more like something a teenage girl would get to try to fix her own hair.

Look at it in the library first.
I was rather disappointed by this book. I was looking for some cute everyday styles, and some formal styles too, but mostly everyday. I have long hair. This book has decent formal hairstyles, but in terms of everyday looks it's slim pickings. A lot of the styles were ugly in my opinion (extremely crimpy or with hair sticking out randomly), or they were for short hair, bangs (don't have) or involved artificial hairpieces (really?). I was hoping for classier looks, things with braids, different parting techniques, etc.Maybe my expectations were too high, but if you use a word like "comprehensive," you set them high as an author. I'd suggest browsing it in a bookstore or library, it's expensive and in my opinion didn't quite deliver.

love it
A must have book--> I recommended to all.it's my bible for what to do with my hair. I'm not a hair person and don't have the patient to sit there for hours do my hair (got dark curly hair). with this book, one flick through the book and get a quick idea and can just do it. it's a time saver for me.

not for me
even though the book is used, it is in great condition. I love the colored step-by-step instruction with simple side description. however, from the 85 salon looks, I can only find 6-7 looks that I liked (not loved). it was so disappointing. it would be the best book in a salon. so much different styles for different hair length (I don't need that). a lot of the instructions are TOO simple. I know how to braid or tie a ponytail. for me, it was not worthy of the price approx. 15 (+shipping).

Great Book!
This book helped me become a hair mom. I have two girls ages 7 & 9, and I got tired of not being able to help them with their hair especially since the older one is very much a girlie, girl.I bought this book and followed the detailed instructions while practicing on my girls. I'm now able to do several styles on my girls as well as myself. It's been a lot of fun and a great bonding experience for us. Would definitely recommend to others.
