Prescription robbery by debauched addicts!
A marveltastic film about being a junkie, and stealing your fix from pharmacy drugstores, throughout the United States of America, Matt Dillon, is great in the lead role, and his superstitious he mentality is marvellously portrayed. Also, William Burroughs stars, as an ageing drug addict, writer of novels, Junky, and The Naked Lunch.

Compare with Trainspotting
This movie, and Trainspotting, defined the limits of where I wanted to go, and their dark humour became a staple. They are also an interesting way to compare US to GB film-wise. Trainspotting does not in my opinion look as good as DC on a second viewing even though it was much funnier the first time.

excellent movie
I was not expecting it, but this is probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is well played, hard scenes are not too hard (therefore avoiding shocking some sensitive people), however the message is given with full strength. It is much more than a road movie. My wife and I have liked it more than later Gus van Sant movies. Additionally, it makes you think. I will buy now the novel from which it has been adapted.

Distraction burglaries at pharmacies.....
Matt Dillon and Kelly Lynch play a couple that use Heather Grahame and James LeGros to help them stage distraction burglaries at pharmacies in Oregon in the 1970's.Director Gus van Sant paints a numbing and sobering look at their lives, from thwarting cop James Remar and his team, always escaping the seemingly inevitable bust and always looking toward their next big hit. After a drug related death, the second half of the film concerns itself with Dillon getting himself clean.Without the ultra intense visuals that hallmarked the later 'Trainspotting' and 'Requiem For a Dream', van Sant uses time lapsed superimposed images to convey moments of thought and of being high. Matt Dillon in particular portrays the pained intensity of a troubled young man very well and Lynch is good, also, conveying a hard-edged individual. The film never wags any fingers nor blames anybody, or anything. There is no glamour either. Somewhat unlike the other two aforementioned drug movies, there's little squalor or total degradation. No pained or graphic scenes of opiate withdrawal. Drugstore Cowboy doesn't have the roller-coaster ups and downs of those two films, either and we're left with a quality drama that informs as much as it entertains. There's also a smattering of dark humour and a great soundtrack too, that superbly enables the mood.

A indie from the Golden Age that has aged well
Unlike some tricksy arthouse American indie films of the 80s and 90s, Drugstore Cowboy does not look quaintly dated, and Van Santa's tale of addiction and redemption still packs a blackly comic punch.Matt Dillon was on a serious winning streak in this period and performance as junkie ringleader Bob is amongst his best.

Classic film... stellar performances all round, ...
Classic film... stellar performances all round, and manages to be both bleak and uplifting... may not resonate with everybody, but for those people who can relate in any small way to 'small town' existence and hedonistic lifestyle choices over common sense and conformity, definitely worth watching.

Great movie and DVD
This DVD has a decent video resolution transfer. The commentary track is worth it IMO. But I am a fan of this film. Great period piece, 70's. Great artistic film production. Interesting story idea of drug culture in America. Great performances from stars on the rise.

DRUGSTORE COWBOY.

Drugstore Cowboy (1990)
This is literally one of my favorite movies of all time! Matt Dillon and Kelly Lynch are great in this one! All of the supporting actors did an awesome job as well(James Remar, James Le Gros, Heather Graham)! This is actually Heather's first big film! If you liked Matt in the outsiders and Rumble Fish, you will love this performance as well. This is as real and as gritty as it can get in a film about street life! It's about a group of friends who go out and rob pharmacies to get high and bounce around places to live. There is way more to it than that. You just have to watch it and see for yourself! A must see!

American classic movie of the 1980s. A must-see for American movie fans.
American classic movie that has become a standard for many films to follow. Van Sant indulges us with his trademark extreme close-ups, and by showing the humanity and 'normalness' of professional drug users.
