Variations sur un vieux Noëll, op.20 - Préludes et Fugues, op.36 - Symphonie-Passion, op.23 / Stefan Engels, orgue
G**.
Fine accounts of some extraordinary music makes this an ideal introduction to the composer
The complete organ works of Marcel Dupré is one of the Naxos projects that have failed to garner much attention, yet it is an important one - there are rivals, including Jeremy Filsell (which I haven't heard), but the volumes I have heard of the series are certainly more than worthy of consideration, although since Naxos has opted for a multi-interpreter approach one might want to consider each issue individually. At least this volume, which contains some of Dupré's best work - and a nice sample of his stylistic and compositional range - is quite satisfying on the whole. The famous Symphonie-Passion is a work of smoldering fire and has its share of pyrotechnics, propulsive rhythmic force and effective harmonic developments and textures. Stefan Engels is surely up for the task - although there seems to be a certain lack of direction in the fourth movement. The variations on Noël Nouvelet are on the other hand thoroughly effective, performed with clarity, color and the right amount of humor, and the three preludes and fugues are generally well done, even if there seems to be a slightly loose focus in the fugues at certain points. The sound is a little dry and shallow, but on the other hand admirably clear. Overall, then, this is a very good disc, and an excellent introduction to the composer and the series.
