Nice unit, easy to install but difficult to mount control unit on wall--- clearance issue.
I may have gotten a defective init but after I completed the installation of all the wires and mounted the base plate to the wall I could not get the control unit to firmly attach to the base plate. It should just clip in as far as I could tell but it just did not feel secure. I double checked all my wires (nothing in the way) and rechecked the mounting (nothing sticking out). The problem was that with the thermostat base firmly attached to the wall (to keep it level), the unit just not have enough clearance behind it for the control box to clip in place. I needed to shim the base plate out from the wall to give it enough clearance. Unfortunately when you do that the unit does not fit flush to the wall. I'm thinking about cutting a thin piece of lexan to go behind it to act as a stand-off or a may return the unit and try another one. Not sure. Otherwise the installation was straightforward and the init works as it should. I was a bit concerned because I have a split system with a gas fired boiler and a seperate AC unit but it worked. Since there are no screws to hold the control box in place, I am concerned if someone walking down the hall bumps into it.. it could fall off the wall. (easily)!!!!!

Customer service refuses to exist.
Update: 3/2020. I fear the thermostat is dead. That or a one year old furnace is. Thermostat turns the furnace on for thirty seconds then off for a minute, rinse and repeat.I wouldn't change my review if Hunter would pick up the phone. Bad customer service breaks the deal for me.Original review title: read the manual.Seriously. Read it. There's a TON of features on this thing, from settable days (wake, leave, home, sleep temperatures to maximize energy efficiency) all the way to a filter change reminder and a little display to show you how energy efficient your settings SHOULD be. (your actual energy savings will depend on your furnace or A/C, piping, ductwork, and many many other factors. Remember, it's a guide, not a guarantee)We bought a house (yay millenial homeowner!) and the previous owners had put in a brand new, high efficiency furnace. Great job, it's a good buy! Oh, you put in a thermostat that has one setting... so an hour or so before I go to sleep I have to change the temperature... I have to remember to lower the setting when I leave for work? Garbage! This was an inexpensive option with the features I wanted, and the backlight is a plus as well. I don't have to remember to save energy, I can just program it into this unit. It's not intuitive though, so read up. It's working well, and reminded me at the right time to change my filter as well to keep my furnace running in tip top shape. (Dirty filters reduce efficiency)If you want hackers to be able to change your temperature in your house one day, get a WIFI thermostat. If you want to set it and forget it (I think I owe ronco a dollar for that one) pick up this thermostat, it's got everything you need to keep your house comfy.Oh, and bonus level (pun intended) it has an integrated bubble level so when you're installing it it will be straight. I double checked with a full size level, and it was pretty darn close, so just put that bubble between the lines, and screw the sucker down. It'll look fine.

Beware: does NOT have RECOVERY mode
This Hunter 44378 unit was a replacement for a Hunter I had for 15 years which was simply dying of old age. This unit is nearly the same in design and function, so I thought it would be great. However, it does NOT have RECOVERY mode, which means it will not gradually increase heat or descrease AC in advance of the set time. Instead, the auxillary/emergency comes on at the set time and runs until the set temperature is reached. My largest heating bill ever was $250 in a month where I experienced unusually cold temps in the single digits at night. Usual heat bill in winter is around $200/month in the coldest months. My last heating bill was $356 and that wasn't even a whole month with the new thermostat!!! Yikes! So I just had a Honeywell RTH9585WF Wifi Smart Thermostat installed. Expensive, but so far very worth the money.

Works very good but mounting problems
Love the thermostat but. Looks like it may have a problem staying on the wall. If your in a household that has someone that loves to play with the settings, and I’m not talking about the children. You mount the unit backplate on the wall the the thermostat attaches to that with electrical pins. A few clicks and it’s detacted

works perfect!
just like any electronic thermostat... it takes time to learn the system... after tweeking with it standing in a hunched over position... I noted that it can be programed while you are sitting with the unit in your lap. and then plugged into the base once it is programmed... VERY NICE FEATURE. I definitely did not want a expensive wifi operated thermostat requiring another app to operate... we have no need to program it remotely.

Solid thermostat with the SPAN feature
I like the SPAN feature which allows how long to keep the heat or air conditioning on when the temperature goes below (heat) or above (air conditioning) thermostat set temperature. For a value of 2 in heating mode, the heat will stay on until it gets 2 degrees above the set temperature. This allows for the heat to not turn on so frequently. Conversely for air conditioning mode.

Great product from a great company. Kudos
This is truly easy to use. At first I was not sure how to use this product so I called up their tech service and the service technician was very patient and very helpful on how to program this unit. Great company that makes a great product

Wrong size in description
I am finding a lot of errors in the owners manual which is frustrating plus the size in the description 21.8 x 25.4 x 28.2 centimeters is wrong. I wanted something large enough as a replacement to avoid having to paint an entire wall and needed it to be that size to cover up the old thermostat area. It is smaller. The set -up is easy and fast delivery. Currently testing
