The Bugabees: Friends With Food Allergies

Strong pros and cons
I have a bit of a mixed feelings going on with this book because it’s nice to finally see a book that acknowledges more than just a peanut allergy. (My daughter suffers from a dairy and soy) This is actually the first book I have ever seen that talks about a soy allergy :) I was also impressed how the book gives you examples of products you would find each allergy in every day products.!The graphics in this book are very fun, vibrant, and colorful I’m going to give it a four because I have mixed feelings on the fact that we never seem to make it through the whole book without her feeling bored. It’s very educational book but pretty lengthy. I am reading it to a four-year-old which may contribute to the problem but it’s hard to also find good books for that age group on this topic. I am satisfied with my purchase. This will be a book I keep around the house and pull out from time to time.

Great for allergy families and friends
Wonderful book to open the discussion on my son's food allergies. I actually find the cadence of the rhyme a little awkward, but my 3 year old loves it, which is all that matters. With school on the horizon, he'll be spending more time out of my care and it's so important that he's aware of and learns to ask about the safety of food around him. This was a wonderful, fun way to introduce the concept.

Great information... from a dietitian's point of view
This book is a great educational tool for children with food allergies, and I think the follow-up book the author wrote (the BugyBops) is a nice addition, for children who don't have food allergies, but are exposed to children who do. I don't adore the cadence when reading this aloud... there's places that it feels to me the words should (and could) rhyme... but that's a personal preference of mine. The illustrations are cute and engaging, and the information is accurate, relevant, and presented in a way that children will be engaged and will learn potentially life saving information.

Easy book to introduce food allergies.
We bought this book to read to my daughter's first grade class, and talk about food allergy awareness. The story is simple and easy for kids to understand, but I wish it was geared a little more towards teaching others allergy awareness rather than teaching kids who have food allergies. All in all, a good intro for young kids.

I really didn't think he'd like the book
I bought this purely for educational purposes, to start some conversations with my 3 yo son about his allergies and make it a "normal" thing. I really didn't think he'd like the book. To my surprise, it's his favorite! We have to read it every night! He thinks the bugs are so cute. At the end, I'm "not allowed" to skip the last pages where we go over which allergies he has and which foods he can eat from the choices. Love it!

Adorable book. My 3 year-old loves it.
My child with food allergies LOVES that there is a book that tells a story about something he deals with every day.I think we will buy another copy to donate to his preschool class room. :) It's an adorable book. The illustrations are super cute and the author seems to have tried to include a mention of all of the most common food allergies, so that most kids won't feel that their allergy is left out.

Love this!
This is so so cute and a great informational book for young children to learn about allergies. Our little girl has a peanut allergy and this has helped her understand that she isn't alone. We will be buying another copy as a Christmas gift for her teacher to read to the class :)

Love this book
I ordered three books for my toddler about food allergies and this is my favorite of the three. Teaches good manners and a positive attitude about turning down food that you’re allergic to. Specifically touches on allergies to peanuts, milk, fish, wheat, shellfish, tree nuts, eggs, and soy.

Brilliant Book
I choose the rating for this book, because it covers a number of different allergies, and is ideal for very young children as it is highly illustrated and also has an activity section in the back. Brilliant

Disappointed
Mother of a poly allergic child, including most of those included in the book, I was really looking forward to having a book to help him remember and possibly explain this to other kids. The graphics are great, the characters are friendly but the problem is the story. In my opinion it is over cheerful "They always have fun and never feel blue, unless they eat foods they're allergic to" and too repetitive, each character repeating in turn "I can still have lots of fun without milk (or other) anyway" (this following a short description of the milk allergic firefly having hives after eating a milkshake). Besides, for each allergen, it gives a symptom which may not correspond to the child's experience so it requires the reader to adjust the text and it basically means the storyline is minimal...I think this book had great intentions but it's trying to do too many things at once: prevent, educate and include.I was expecting a book around how to feel included despite the FA and basically, this book intends to do this but in my opinion fails because all the characters are allergic to something (while in real life, FA kids are often the only one in their group/class), there isn't really a story (my son who loves book wasn't interested at all, despite the very pretty drawings). I would have liked a real story more around the lines of a food allergic bug living around non FA kids and all of them finding ways to have fun without resorting to food and including what it feels like to be FA. It's the emotional aspect of FA that I think would benefit from being addressed in a story, the education part is much easier to deal with and it better conducted via real life events (ex in the supermarket, playing games of what it OJK to eat or not).I realise this is a tall order and it's great that this book is around anyway. I'll probably try to use it again with my 3yo once he gets interested in the details or with another story with it.

Ok. I was hoping the story developed more, ...
Ok. I was hoping the story developed more, too repetative. I was hoping for more since it was more expensive.
