Q: Is the surface suitable for writing? Can I write names on them?

After I painted and varnished them, I was able to put my initials at the bottom. You can write a name and date on the back, but in very small letters. I painted one front with a larger A for the University of Alabama, the teacher's favorite team. I paint initials or small things on them so that they can hang on a necklace. I also painted a red heart for Valentine's day. Personally, I like the larger ones, about 2 to 2 1/2 or 3" wide. That way I can paint a Christmas tree, a gingerbread man, a cardinal, a boat whatever. I love to paint Christmas ornaments. There is more than enough room to put a full name and date on the back. Hope I have helped you.

Hi Jaclyn, Yes, these sand dollars have holes for stringing. This is one of our most popular sizes of sand dollars as they can be used in so many decorative projects. Here is a few of the ideas our buyers have shared with us: 1. To create a garland use fine jute, fine gold cording or thin raffia and string through the top center hole of the sand dollar - tie a knot on either side of the sand dollar to control the spacing. You can add small knobby star fish between sand dollars by looping the cording around the top bump on one of the arms and knotting in place. 2. They look great with a simple fine gold cord threaded through the top center hole, make a loop about 2" long and tie a knot creating a hanging loop - tie a cute little bow at the top of the loop to finish the decoration. Perfect for the Christmas tree, add to a card or invitation as a tiny gift or add to the wrapping of a gift. Have fun!!
