Soft dreamy bokeh...but is this a one trick pony or did I get a dud?
I own 3 Samyang/Rokinon/Bower Primes (7.5mm f3.5 fisheye, 12mm f2.0 and 300mm f6.3 reflex). They are all manufactured by the same company in Korea but just rebranded. They go by other names as well. They are well built, well priced and generally provide good resolution. OK the 300mm is a little soft with low contrast but I knew that going in and it performs as expected. When I saw the 50mm f1.2, I had high hopes and I decided to pull the trigger. Amazon as usual, shipped it out to me in no time.Starting with the physical aspects of the lens: The dimensions are compact and it is dense. It has a nice familiar solid feel about it. The aperture clicks smoothly on full and half stops. The focusing ring wasn't uniformly smooth throughout the range. It was tighter on one end and looser on the other. Certainly not as smooth as my other manual primes. The lens mounted firmly on my Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. No slop or play that other's have reported in other mounts. On to the imaging: First, I tested the lens hand held with IBIS to check out the dreamy bokeh and I have to say this lens delivered! At f1.2, this was exactly what I was looking for on the micro four thirds format. The image center was a little soft but at f1.2 and handheld, I was expecting that. I decided to do some more stringent testing to eliminate variables...This time with a tripod, anti-shock turned on, IBIS turned off and using a 2 second timer. I printed off some test targets and setup the test shots using 14X zoom and focus peaking. I shot a series of images on full stops. Checking the images on my computer, the center of the image was soft/blurry at f1.2 and unfortunately, it didn't improve as I stopped down. I decided to check my setup against my Olympus 14-150mm super zoom and repeated the test without changing the setup. I set the Olympus to 49mm and it is wide open at f5.5, and it was sharp across the frame thru to f22. I knew the Olympus was sharp, and now I'm even more impressed with it.My copy of the Rokinon may be a dud. I've seen positive reviews for it and that helped sway my decision to get one.Bottom Line. If you are shooting in low light and need a large aperture, or if you are looking for a portrait lens that can deliver soft dreamy bokeh, AND you don't want or need sharp center details, this lens may be for you. Remember, this is a completely manual lens and f1.2 d.o.f. is razor thin, so getting things in focus is a challenge unless you shoot at greater d.o.f.. If you shoot fast, you are better off investing in an autofocus lens.B.T.W. I ended up returning the lens. I can live with a little softer center at f1.2 but I need it to sharpen up as I stop the lens down. Like I said, my copy may be a dud.
