So far, so good.
I got an increasingly bad rotten egg smell from the tap/showers originating from a water heater less than a year old. I need to evaluate my water as to why the anode corroded so quickly, but I replaced with this device and the smell is 100% gone. Hopefully the powered element will slow corrosion in the future.

Saved my water heater. Capable of protecting another magnesium rod as well.
Elevated sulfur levels this year caused sulfur bacteria to move into my Bradford White water tank and attack the magnesium anode. It's nearly impossible to replace a BW anode rod without destroying the tank, so I thought I was out of luck. However this product saved the day even though it says it's not for BW tanks, and I was able to leave the old rod installed. This slim rod is short enough to be inserted through the relief valve port without hitting the flue in the middle. You may need a coupling for extra space depending on your tank. I relocated the relief valve to the discharge port with a tee, and installed this rod in the relief valve port. You cannot insert this rod into the discharge port without removing the BW anode assembly, so it has to go in the relief valve port. I added a piece of HDPE sleeving over the part of the rod that is inside the coupling to avoid excess scale buildup or current draw - see the designs for Corro-Protec rods for Bradford White to see what I mean. After the first day I detected large amounts of dissolved iron in the water, a couple days later everything was at equilibrium and the iron and sulfur odour was gone. It's been a month with no issues since. This unit comes with a 20mA constant current supply which is able to maintain 2.5v in my hard water, which is sufficient to passivate magnesium and protect the old rod. I only gave it 3 stars for value because the supply is only worth a couple bucks and the titanium/mixed oxide rod is basically a fancy TIG rod that's probably worth $20 - but cathodic protection equipment is always a bit overpriced, and it was great to be able to buy this off the shelf on short notice. Highly recommend.

Shocked at how well it worked.
Honestly surprised how this cured our smelly egg hot water smell in 48 hours. If you have this problem, you should definitely try this, or a similar powered anode rod. It was tough to install though, getting the old one out is a pain in the rear. But if you get this installed, it works magic at a low cost for a fix.
