Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade: 1940-1950

a valuable addition to my collection
This is a beautiful book, the early images are quite rare and it's a real find. Being an artist, I look at the pictures first and haven't gotten to the text yet. An interesting feature here is full page full color plates accompanied by detail shots. Many of these pieces are in private collections and don't come up in public exhibitions, this is a good way to access them.

Recommend to all
Very good book but some of the essays will leave you saying "huh"! The book gives a good and interesting overview about the artist. The color plates are nice. I would definitely recommend this book if you want to better understand Rothko.

Great reproductions and insite into this phenomenal artist.
Most people are only familiar with Mark Rothko's later work. There is a rich history behind this work, that leads to the abstracts we know him for. There are examples of his contempories, that influnced him and keen insite into the man and his work. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is intersted in learning more about Mark Rothko and the artistic journey that an artist took.

New awareness of Rothko
I've always loved Rothko and have read everything I can that has been published about him. This book added a new dimension about his art. It's a great read and filled with wonderful imagery. If Rothko intrigues you, this is the book for you.

well written and provocative
An interesting series of essays illustrated with examples of this major artist's work in what was a transition to the Rothko who is transcendent and perhaps the most outstanding abstract artist of his era.

disappointing... the cover is the best
Not enough pictures from his "field of color" period, which he is mostly known for.
