A Decent Easily Read Introduction to the Balanced Scorecard
The concept of the Balanced Scorecard is not difficult – it is a mix of performance indicators which reflect the organisation’s strategy. The skill is in developing, deploying and managing a small number of KPIs which truly reflect the strategy of the organisation. This book, by Mike and Pippa Bourne gives a good basic introduction to the Balanced Scorecard, its aims, and issues in implementation. The book is an easy-read and can be finished in a couple of hours - ideal on a train or plane. The original Kaplan and Norton books are a tedious slog full of padding. This is straight to the point with only a little padding. It's a good introduction, but it does, in my view, have some weaknesses:1) Coverage of Strategy Maps is rather basic and there is not much guidance on how to develop them or link them into the Balanced Scorecard2) More importantly, the detail on how to develop KPIs is minimal and weak. There is some very basic stuff there but not enough to help you develop the small number of really critical KPIs you need for the Balanced Scorecard.Overall a good introduction for the absolute beginner, but not a great deal of help in implementation. It is available very cheaply second-hand so a good place to start.
