Tiger cowrie shells are the nickname for the Cypraea Tigris. This is the shell for a large sea snail which is a marine gastropod mollusk and a member of the Cypraeidae family. It got the name when described by Carl Linnaeus in his book Systema Naturae and the name has remained. It obviously derives its scientific name “Tigris” from the tiger. In reality, the coloration on these cowries is spotted rather than striped, making it a bit of a misnomer. Tiger Cowrie shells are naturally egg or oval-shaped. The shells are naturally glossy, giving a polished finish even before full polishing. The top and bottom are usually rounded, as opposed to the sharper edges of some species of cowries. The Tiger Cowrie is native to the ocean floor in the Indio-Pacific region. This means it is found along the east coast of Africa up through the Philippines. It can also be found along the coast of Australia. It is a carnivorous sea snail that feasts on live coral, and can usually be found near large live coral reefs. When developing, you cowries eat algae. They were once more abundant, but irresponsible fishing practices that have destroyed coral have led to a lessened population of these tiger cowries as well.
