Excellent product
I am not a doctor or a veterinarian, and have never used an otoscope before. Not really sure exactly what I expected, but I was absolutely amazed at how easily and clearly this otoscope lets you see the inside of the ear. I guess I expected it to be difficult to use without special training, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I literally picked this otoscope up for the first time, turned it on, stuck it in an ear, and immediately got a perfect view of the ear drum. Amazing! Again, I am certainly not claiming to be an expert (quite the opposite actually) and won't even comment on interpreting what you will see with an otoscope. What I can tell you is that this thing works great, is easy to use, and appears to be of good quality. I love the light quality that it emits, and the lens is very clear and doesn't seem to have any noticeable distortion. The handle is lightly knurled metal, and has a metal cap that screws on the end to hold the batteries in (it takes 2 "C" cells). The neck is also metal and has a twist-lock connector that allows the otoscope head to be removed from the handle. The light switch is a plastic collar on the front of the handle that has a nice positive "click" when you twist it to turn the LED light on. The light switch also acts as a dimmer switch giving the user control over the brightness of the light, ranging from medium intensity to very bright. The otoscope head and the swinging part that holds the lens are plastic, and don't strike me as being particularly heavy duty. Perfectly functional, but I would't want it to land on its head if it were to be dropped. Not sure if the lens is plastic or glass, but I don't care as it seems to be good quality. No problems with focal distance. The vinyl case is a nice touch and will help keep the otoscope safe and dust free when not in use.In summary, I can't think of anything that I would change to make this device perform better (scores 5 out of 5). I would say that fit and finish is excellent (scores 5 out of 5). Durability is very good but I would not call it "heavy duty" because of the plastic piece that holds the lens (scores 4 out of 5). Highly recommended!

just a nice clean split where the screw boss is and another ...
I used this device one time. The second time I went to use it, approximately one month later, I removed the device from the protective case and the plastic ring that holds the rear lens in dropped out in three pieces. No signs of stress, impact, just a nice clean split where the screw boss is and another spot by the lower tab. Stored in it's padded case in a quiet spot in my bathroom cabinet in a protected drawer space. I can't possibly give this more than one star if the device can't last through a second use. I was even willing to purchase the part and reattach it and try again, however I can't find any way to get the parts replaced. The 30 day warranty seems a bit useless if at 37 days, the device falls apart. Looks like I need to spend a little more money on an otoscope that will stay in one piece.

Great price! Good product.
I really have no complaint with this otoscope except the specula just won't stay in place. Sometimes the light was a bit hard to focus, but for 90 bucks??? Sheez, it's still a steal! Because of the great price I felt that I would be able to replace it so I ended up giving it to a doc in the mission field in Nepal; he was extremely happy with it. I will certainly buy another one and hopefully will be able to figure out the trick to making the specula stay on. At this price, I can deal with removing them from the patient's ear every now and then.

Great Otoscope and Outstanding Service
When I was looking for a replacement for an existing otoscope, this item stood out. It had good reviews and the price is certainly right. Well, let me say that I am duly impressed. This otoscope arrived quickly; securely packed. It uses 2 C-cells which I inserted. The handle wouldn't attach to the base. It's a simple threaded union so I knew there was no 'trick' to assembling the unit. I emailed Med School Supply (the manufacturer) Friday afternoon. I received an email reply within the hour, verifying my shipping address. I received another email Saturday afternoon confirming that the replacement handle had been shipped. I received the replacement part Monday. I was using the otoscope Tuesday! Outstanding!Pro:Outstanding customer serviceBright white lightSturdy constructionPriceCon:NoneI wholeheartedly recommend this item!

It works, you can see in, but the light is a bit touchy...
This works well in that you can see inside the ear. (I bought this for my baby who was prone to ear infections for a bit.) It comes in nice case and you can adjust the sizes (of the cones), so you can use it from child to adult. My one complaint is that the light is a bit touchy. If I don't get it just right or move it, the light sometimes goes out and I kind of have to tap it back on. Not a big deal, except when you're trying to use it with a squirming child. If I had to do it again, I might shop around a bit. But that's not to say it would be off my list entirely. I would just look more closely at the other options.

Sorry, but no.
I'm in med school, but I got this for my dad, who is an ENT. I must say that this is a poorly crafted instrument. It feels like it would fall apart. Does it work ok? Sure. But I could really see the lens breaking off. Let's just say I got that "I've-been-had" sinking feeling when I pulled it out of the package. The frustrating thing is that this could be made adequately if they would spend maybe 5 dollars more on components. This is certainly not a replacement for a Welch Allyn. Welch Allyns are hugely overpriced for sure, but they are very high quality and last forever. Do most people need that? No. So what's the issue? It's the price. The same seller sells the same thing on a certain auction site for much less. That price is much more in line with what I'd feel OK with paying for this. Still, what are you going to do? Carry around 2 in case one breaks? I was wary when I saw "Pretty good for the price"... To the seller- I'm sorry for the bad review, I am glad you are trying to bring more reasonably priced medical equipment to the marketplace. I just think people should know what they are getting here.
