Starry Night: Van Gogh at the Asylum

Intelligent, highly researched, great read
My husband & I read this and the other 2 in the series. We love VG's paintings, have a lot of books on him & his work. No art speak, simple but pertinent description of the paintings, there is no critical analysis. This is VG's life at the time, what paintings he did when and where and what he was thinking or writing at the time in these last crucial years. Bailey's research is thorough and he has uncovered an astonishing amount of new stuff from a field I would have thought was well mined...for ex. showing a photo of the registration of VG in St. Pauls asylum. Illustrations are plentiful and beautiful, highly enjoyable books. Very glad we read them.

Livro excelente, vale mil estrelas. O problema foi o envelope que a Amazon embalou que nao vale estrela nenhuma. Amazon, o que está acontecendo? Um livro de quase 300 reais embalado em um envelope vagabundo. Economia porca e sem sentido.

A very entertaining read
I've enjoyed this book very much. Clearly written and well researched, it does provide a very interesting insight into Van Gogh's stay at the Asylum and some of the characters he got to know there. The illustrations are especially beautiful (and of a high quality) and I particularly appreciated the closeups of many of the paintings. Not really a criticism, but I was left at the end wanting to know more and it is a pity that there is not more historical detail available about this fascinating period of the Artist's life.

As with the other two in the series:Arles and Auvers, this is beautifully presented and meticulously researched by one of the best in the business.
