Doesn't Take You Anywhere - But, Enjoy The Journey
The Edge of Seventeen is a 2016 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, in her directorial debut. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick, and Haley Lu Richardson. This movie centers around Nadine - an awkwardly timid teenager whom is navigating the hardships of adolescence following a falling out with one of the only friends that she has.If I had to pick my favorite thing about this film, it would be the overall messages regarding acceptance and validation. Unlike other comedies like this one - set in High School - the characters interact with Nadine in such a way that it isn't implied she needs to change things about herself to be likeable or worth loving in any way. Conflict between her and other characters doesn't depend on shallow motivations (winning a guy over, looking a specific way) to encourage its audience to continue watching. By the time we come to our conclusion, Nadine is still the same person (or, at least close) she was at the beginning despite the acknowledgement that she is still trying to "find her own way." I can only hope that media taking place in a high school setting take this to heart and follows suit.Speaking of conclusion, it would be fair of me to say that this movie isn't necessarily trying to take its viewers on a trip to a specific goal or achievement. The elements that embrace adolescence are present (Sex, angst, rivalry, and romance, just to name a few), but they are integrated in such a way that none of those necessarily "dominate" the film or have some kind of overbearing influence on the overarching story. This is a movie anybody can watch and relate to - even if on a miniscule note - and this level of authenticity is easy to appreciate. On a final note, the choices made by the casting department make this worth watching on its own. Steinfield shines as a junior feeling perpetually out of place. For not having a dynamic role, Harrelson knocks it out of the park as a teacher that grudgingly accepts the position of "male role-model" that is forced on to him. Other actors - despite being seen less often as our focal point - introduce their own tones to separate scenes and carry the plot along in a way that is seamless and easy to digest.Real, raw, and well done: I would recommend!

“Life’s About Taking Risks. Don’t Be Afraid To Put Yourself Out There” – Mr. Bruner
Nadine at 7 and bullied, but making a best friend finally at second grade in a sweet mannered Krista (Hayley Lu Richarson), Nadine at 13 and horrified about her appearance, then Nadine at 17 (Hailee Steinfeld), an awkward teenage student in junior high school. Luckily for her, she has her friend now who has had her back for ten years. She has a quite popular brother, Darian (Blake Jenner), whom she has always considered her mother’s favorite as ‘things just came easier for him’. Was this just bestowed on him? A great question to figure out throughout the film as Nadine constantly is condescending towards him and is quick to belittle him also. In a sudden turn-of-events, Nadine feels as if she loses her longtime friendship with Krista with absolutely no way for Krista to make up with Nadine. She severs all ties and we begin the story at the outset, is this all that led up to it…Nadine, given to histrionics, runs into her teacher’s room for another of her dripping with sarcasm issues. Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson) puts up with another misguided and disillusioned tirade of Nadine's before passing it off in a brilliant bit of witty sarcasm himself. Basically, they wouldn’t expect either to say anything but what they do and seem to understand each other well. Nadine is as witty and awash in sarcasm as a teen can be and is well able to use it. She thinks her mother; Lola (Kyra Sedgwick), odd, quirky, and self-involved while never giving any credence to what Darian has had to handle with her. Lola heavily leans on Darian’s opinions, help, and guidance.Nadine is under the influence that there is a great guy she is has a crush on working at a pet store, while all the while in one of her classes; a young documentary filmmaker is crushing on her, Erwin (Hayden Szeto). Nadine must figure out who she is being real about and whom Nadine could really care less about. This film is not your ordinary teen slice of life film or one strictly for adolescents. Adults will find this banter a lot of fun too. Writer and director Kelly Fremon Craig pulled many rabbits out of her hat to surprise and delight you with the dialog, the wonderful sarcastic wit, and the superb soundtrack in this movie. Woody Harrelson could have easily taken over this movie but he holds back and allows Hailee Steinfeld to shine… and shine she does. I absolutely love this film!

Dad watches chick flick with daughter
Chick flick? Pretty much !! My teenage daughter and I were having a father / daughter date night. We finished dinner and she wanted to watch a movie. We flipped through the typical stuff on NETFLIX and such but nothing caught our eye. We popped over to Amazon Video and looked through a few new releases. We watched several trailers till we came to this one. It seemed genuine and had a couple well known names in it.It did not disappoint. It's about a teenage girl who losses her father at a young age and struggles to navigate her teenage years without a father. It's real and it's not out of the question these days. As a father to a teenage girl, it really made me think what things would be like if something like that happened and put my daughter in that position. It's amazing how a movie can make you think about reality and the own things in your life. It's a good film and well worth watching. It seemed like the plot was probably played out a little longer than needed to be and could have been shortened to get the same message across.

The Edge of Seventeen BD: a technical review
This is a review centered on the technical aspect of the Blu-Ray. The movie itself is easily a 5-star masterpiece. Briefly, this is a very VERY well written, witty "high-school" comedy, which NEVER gets boring from start to finish, in part because of the A-level acting by both Woody Harrelson and the incredible Hailee Steinfeld. This should qualify for your "blind buy" list easily. The movie is a beautifully transferred 1.85:1 video in AVC at a bitrate consistently above 30 Mbps (up to 37). This movie, having been shot digitally, translates to a very sharp image where texture and skin are very well defined. Even if there is some noise here and there in dark scenes, it remains a visual eye candy. The color palette however stays very standard, which is not a bad thing at all (nothing too extreme in colors à la John Wick if you know what I mean).Sound is why I took away two stars: although this blu-ray comes with a French soundtrack (in addition to the English one), both of them are only included in Dolby TrueHD in 5.1. This is not bad by any means but when one knows that the US version comes with a marvellous English soundtrack in DTS-HD MA in 7.1, one feels cheated. In an age where Atmos and X are the new standard, this is further unacceptable. And I hate when corners are cut in a format where compromises should be minimal. In the end, it depends on your preferences: if you need the french dub, this is the only way you'll get it in Canada. If you don't mind the downgraded English track, this is the best value. If you do mind however, Amazon sells the US import version, albeit at a considerable price premium. This premium is further offset by a better quality packaging and presentation. It also does come with a DVD and digital copy, which this lacks.

Coming of age in the 21st century
This is a fabulous coming of age tale with exceptional acting and amazing character development. It really captures what it's like to be a modern teenager. The director has her finger on the pulse of the modern teenager and is able to take what could be an unlikable main character and makes her endearing (Hailee Steinfeld also deserves a great deal of credit for portraying Nadine in a sympathetic manner). The storytelling is great and you really feel for all the characters. And it's incredibly funny as well. Woody Harrelson has never been better in a supporting role.
