Wit and Wisdom from Poor Richard's Almanack

I admire Ben Franklin and will read everything that I can find that is written about him or written by him.

Simple and direct. It brings some perspective on Mr. Franklin's mindset. I just loved this book.

米国の政治家・科学者・博学者であるベンジャミン・フランクリン（1706～90）が編んだ格言・名言・警句入りの暦（1932～57）から、約400首を選んで、24の主題別に編集した手頃な選集。『男、女、結婚』という主題では、Marry above thy match, and thou’lt get a master.(身分違いの結婚をすると、相手はご主人様となる)Keep your eyes open before your marriage, half shut afterwards. (結婚前は目を大きく開いて、結婚後は半分閉じておきなさい)などが載っている。なんとなくユーモラスである。セクシズム的な要素が随所にあるが、当時の男女観を知る上でも貴重である。英和辞典に再録されている名言・警句も少なくない。『フランクリン自伝 』(岩波文庫)と並んで手ごろなフランクリン入門書である。
