The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization

Just received the book, and after reading the first couple of chapters, I have already had several mini epiphanies. It even offers a free leadership assessment. This book is perfect for anyone that has hit the plateau in their career, or feel stuck, this is a great book to reach bigger areas or improve in "blindspots." Will update this review once I have finished and been able to take these tips head on at work.

John Maxwell‘s book is excellent on laying down guidelines to help you become a better leader. If you are willing to make changes in your own leadership style to become a better leader, just follow the steps and allow the changes to happen naturally and the people you lead will also learn how to be better leaders by the Example that you set.

Some people have criticized this book in part because it does not tell us anything that a reasonably intelligent person does not already know. If this were true, then why are the ideas contained within this book in practice throughout corporate America to a greater extent? Maxwell begins by shattering a series of myths that one has to be the top leader to have a voice within an organization. Then he advances on to discuss how one can increase their leadership by doing seemingly basic things like first taking care of yourself, than others, before moving on to take on more responsibility.For me as a twenty something year old guy questioning the direction of his life, the 360 Degree Leader was a sobering wake up call about the things that I am not doing in my life. Our own thinking often holds us back in life as we get trapped in our own whimsical dreams or short-sided desires for fame and fortune. The road of middle leadership is a tough and rocky road marked by hard work and discipline. This book is primarily designed for the business and corporate world, but the lessons contained in this book could be widely applicable to persons outside the corporate world.The 360 Degree Leader is a fantastic book for someone in the business world, a person just entering “the real world” or a person reconsidering their life.

Again, John Maxwell has rolled out an awesome Book on Personal Leadership, the framework is very practical for leaders in development, and leaders. A must have title for Personal Leadership.

In The 360 Degree Leader, by John C. Maxwell, he takes leadership out of the realm of top management only and puts it back into the hands of those in middle management positions as well! He does this by taking his over 30 years of leading and sharing insights that will help those in the middle of organizations to influence those around them in all directions—those above them, those below them, and even those on the same level as they are. This is what Maxwell calls a 360-degree leader!In this book, Maxwell does a great job at getting us to consider how, if we want to, we truly can influence those around us regardless of where we’re at or where they are in our organization (and I would argue in our life as well). One of the tools he uses to do this is the real-life stories from himself, his team, and other leaders he knows sprinkled through the book. Each of these stories really helps to bring home a point that he is trying to make.I also enjoyed how each of the main sections was broken up into bite-sized chapters covering only one main principle each. This made the concepts easier to digest and allowed him to build whole sections’ concepts up over time. However, if you are trying to read whole sections of the book at a time, this can get a little overwhelming due to their size.If you are into leadership development and desire to have more influence, especially over your bosses, then I recommend this book to you :)

Be a leader where you are; to your boss, your coworkers, and those you supervise. This is the second copy of this book I've bought for a friend. It's easy to read because of how it's outlined. The author is a Christian and the book is chock-full of easy to use leadership techniques that really make a difference.

This book is very realistic and practical and full of principles that brings wisdom over the leadership matter. I recommend this book for managers and leaders.

Excellent book, considering managing and leading up down and sideways. Great tips and insights. Might be coloured to the areans in which the authors has personally experienced, but I would say as a middle manager or lower minion myself certainly I have experienced challenges scenarios described in this book. Great advice, but needs also to be considered in the context you are working in (ie all things will not hold true) -Worth the time though and effort to study in furthering your career. The author is probably the mentor you wish you had...
