Behind the Burly Q- The Story of Burlesque in America

This was a fascinating insight into the lives of early American burlesque stars. The photos of the era are marvelous. Through personal interviews with many of the stars still living, you learn how these women got started in the business, how they crafted their performances, how they designed their fabulous costumes, the outrageous money they earned, and how they were treated as royalty when they were at the top of their game. Sadly, it showed that, although these women made fantastic money, many of them ended up in poverty. Well worth viewing.

This documentary was entertaining and informative and a must-see for anyone interested in American history. Leslie Zemeckis shines a light on these forgotten stars who were an important part of our culture. The stories were illuminating and I loved the way footage of the young dancers played while they were talking fifty years later.

I had seen this documentary many years ago and was so excited when I finally found it on Amazon. I tried to watch it today for the first time and it skipps in multiple different spots. It doesn't seem to be scratched at all (I literally opened it new out of the package and put it directly in my player). That leads me to believe I just got a bad disc (something went wrong while writing the disc). It's a phenomenal documentary but my specific copy is trash.

A throw back to old school sexy, this DVD features commentary from the original stars, over original photos and footage. It chronicles some of the bigger names in burlesque, showing behind the scenes and on stage antics. Personally, my favorite part was hearing the stories, not from experts or historians, but from the people themselves. I would buy it again. It's pure entertainment.If you're looking for just pure dancing, you can't go wrong with old classics like Teaserama. But the strip acts featured are more a supplement to the story, vs. the main course. And yes, for the curious, there are a few bare bosoms.

Would have liked to have seen more original film footage of the girls instead of hearing about their screwed up private lives.

I'm bored by documentaries about strippers made by feminists who pretend that strippers weren't selling sex and were proto-feminists fighting for female empowerment. They try to place burlesque into some woke world of anti-male anti-patriarchal sisterhood. Come on! It was sexy working class broads taking their clothes off to titillate men.This film would have been much better with more raunch and more fun. It contained almost no comedy routines. I love the world of old time burlesque but this documentary is way too squeaky clean to represent it. It was good dirty fun!

it was an interesting documentary and was relatively well researched in this viewers opinion. it was interesting to see how attractive many of the females were when they were young.
