Good basic BD player. 1st lasted 26months. 2nd just started using
Bought first one in December 2017 for £74, second in February 2020 for £79 - excluding delivery charges - both directly from Amazon; they packed both carefully in outer boxes so arrived intact.ADDENDUM, dropping 1 star.First player ran for only 12 days after cleaning disc used. Then wouldn't even recognise the cleaning disc.Second player seems fine, hope to get longer from it.First player stopped recognising discs at all after 26 months, I feared the worst.I rechecked ratings for budget players, two years on: this one still rated highly so I bought another.I also bought an:Allsop CleanDR Laser Lens Cleaner for Blu-Ray/XBOX 2017/18Condition: NewSold by: Fulfillment ExpressFulfilled by Amazon£17.48, ex delivery charges. The rule is DON'T USE DVD CLEANERS IN A BLURAY, but I figured I would try to 'resurrect' my first player - one cleaning cycle and almost like new; occasionally have to open/close drawer when it says 'no disc', but it's working again!Weird thing, has zero clearance brushes and it works! Also I had to reset to PCM to get sound; I factory reset when it was playing up.So, spare player now in case it happens again.NOW MY ONLY PLAYER.I don't have broadband so cannot comment on the 'Smart' features. As far as I can tell, you shouldn't expect much for less than £100; digital audio out is coaxial not optical; not universally available on soundbars.Significant irritations are:- the Lilliputian remote; so many times I have pressed the Netflix button instead of fast forward, or favourite instead of rewind;but not too power hungry, I use nimh aaas: they need charging every 4-6 weeks;- no zoom to read inserts properly;- maybe because I cannot do a firmware update, it does not always remember where I was on Blu-ray discs, but DVDs seem fine.NB the 2020 player has a later Software version so hopefully fixed.RE Software Update.I have tried downloading onto a USB stick at the library, but the player didn't recognise it, so factory software only.I followed the instructions to the letter: no good.Initially I found the extra flap at the front irritating. However, it does a good job keeping the disc drawer clean.I also use a THIN microfibre cloth as a general dust cover, does not overheat the unit - external PSU and no vents.A good starter unit for HDTV or 1080HD.Reliable if not feature laden. Not the cheapest, but worth the extra I think.

Concise and good Blu-Ray player with Wi-Fi connection
The title says it all, it's a concise, reasonably-priced and good Blu-Ray player. As a Blu-Ray player, of course, it's a simple player, but it comes with SONY's smart TV functions, such as many apps that you can use like YouTube and Netflix. If you want to use any of the apps, obviously you'll need a broadband internet connection. The most important thing that's not clearly stated in the product page is that it's a Wi-Fi connectable machine, so as long as you have a wireless broadband network at home you can enjoy all the apps via the internet (as long as you're in the UK). You can also connect to the internet via an ethernet cable. It uses an HDMI cable to connect to the TV (but it's not included, so you'll need to find one separately). If your TV is also by SONY then you can do most things with just one tiny remote control that comes in the box. My tiny little criticism is that there's no indicator on the front panel that would show the time or the playback remaining minutes and so on. It only shows a very small green LED light that indicates that the player is switched on. I don't really need those flashy indicators, to be fair, but it'd be nicer if there was a little more indication, even a digital clock or something. For this reason, I give 4 stars with my rating, but otherwise, it'd be very good.(05/11/2018) - There has been a technical issue with this unit, so I'd like to share it with you. The player started to lose the picture and the audio intermittently from time to time, and the worse it got the longer it is used. I checked the cables that were properly connected and tried to change the HDMI cable too, but the same result. I contacted Amazon that was happy to offer to either a replacement or a full refund, so I got a replacement as I was happy with the unit. After replacing it, I've had no problem at all, and I'm happy about it.

Good entry level unit
My first Smart player, enjoying the new features but it's very temperamental. Couple of times the background main screen draws, but non of the icons are loaded, switch off and on again. Couple of times 'SSL can't verify certificate' opening YouTube App then blank screen, switch off and on again. Quite often apps won't load content even though the internet is up and good speed, most of the time turning off and on again fixes this. Had a range of other errors I've forgotten about, and the fix was... yup you guessed, off and on.The remote is really good for getting the signal to the unit, you have to try to obscure the IR led, otherwise just press buttons like it's a RF. Tactile feedback is lacking for the centre button, often find myself pressing the down arrow. The blu-ray player does whine intermittently, which can be annoying during quieter scenes, overall I like the unit, and it's short comings are acceptable for the price---- Update -----Had a variety of errors about the 'app being too large', 'bandwidth too low', certain menus being inaccessible or very slow to load and those noted above - all of which cleared up after resetting to factory defaults. So far I've only had to do this the once, it does mean re-linking the accounts for apps, but not a major hassle.---- Update 2 ----Nearly two years on, working fine but couple of points worth mentioning. Previous issue with spurious error messages and connectivity issues have all cleared up completely since having the house/telegraph cable replaced. Whilst the speed was high, the error rates (data gets resent) were also high and disconnects frequent. The unit really doesn't like losing internet connection, either during or between uses.I'm not sure if mine is faulty in some way, or if it's just bad design. The disc player always spins the disc if one is present. So you'll have to remove it while using an app such as YouTube or Prime Video. Generally it's not loud enough to be annoying, but worth noting.
