The difference in the W and no W is that the W size gives extra fabric in the thighs, hips, and chest. For example, a size 16 is a specific waist size in pants. A size 16W will be that waist size plus extra fabric or stretchiness in the thighs, hips, and waist. I am a size 16 in the top but am a 16W in the pants because of larger hips. Some women have narrow hips which means that a W has far too much fabric flapping around in their thighs and hips. The waist may fit but the thighs and hips are too much extra fabric. For women whose waist is smaller than their hips, the W is beneficial because their curves can fit into the pants without pinning the waist. In a dress the W is not complicated because the extra fabric in the chest may be too much fabric. I usually do not wear dresses because a regular size dress does not fit my waist and a W is far too much fabric in the chest. It is good to know the meaning of W (women’s size) and how the W adds extra fabric to the thighs, hips, and chest area of a garment. I hope this explanation helps.

I really don’t know. I’m 5’8 and 235lbs and I got a size 22/24. I’m truly not impressed. They narrow towards the knee but hit me about 4 inches above the knee. They are not comfortable. If you have slimmer legs and knees they may be fine for you.
