Jackie (DVD+DHD)

Genius film about an heroic woman!
This movie inspired me - inspired me to want to be brave, strong. Despite what I think now, those qualities may one day mean something to me again.Watch the REAL Jackie tour on youtube before the movie - she seems so vulnerable, sweet and demure that you almost don't listen to what she is saying because you expect it will all be fluff. But the tour goes on long enough that her demeanor becomes something that feels real and the distraction of it melts away. After that, I was just flat out in awe of the depth of her reverence for the presidents that came before, evidenced by her intricate knowledge of every little thing they left behind in that house. Moved by her deep love of history, she strings together like cherished pearls stories of the sacrifices and losses of those long gone. It was astounding. I was overcome with this feeling that she could have been anything she wanted. But here she was choosing grace, just grace - her way of supporting not just her family but the American people by supporting their president - no matter that "the people" had taken her husband's attention away from her. Then this pure soul, selfless and kind in a pink pill box hat who is smiling and waving suddenly has her husband's head blown open in her lap...live on TV! The brazen brutal American ugliness of the whole thing... in the limelight of TV. We've all seen the footage a thousand times but THIS movie puts you in the car with them. Then despite the evisceration of heart, mind and soul to nothingness there's a whiplash to start event planning, packing up the whole house, and assuring the kids everything is going to be okay....and that sweet, vulnerable, seemingly fragile Jackie does it all...and rules the whole world for a single day - the magnitude of her will on this day is something to behold.I don't know why this movie doesn't have 5 stars across the board from everyone. This is a very worthy story and a genius film about an heroic woman but I think it takes a couple of viewings to absorb - it just might be too awfully sad to absorb for some. Jackie's/Natalie's childlike grace and measured vocal style really take a bit of time to warm up to and then you almost miss too much. My suggestion is watch the real tour first, then the movie twice, and then the real tour again if you have the heart. The script and everyone in the film is terrific.I lost a loved one too, my daughter, she died in front of my face in a very horrific and terrifying manner. I, like Jackie, think I could have saved her if I was smarter, quicker, more on guard for pure evil. A person works hard with what they have to build qualities in themselves that will provide the best possible outcome for their families. You work hard, listen, sacrifice, study, follow the rules....Then that all backfires horrifically because - well it's just not a civil society and you were the last to know...its just dog eat dog? money, money, money? average americans asked by their employers to do awful things to others for...money...and they do it? I saw the Milgrim research footage on youtube like everyone else, but I didn't believe it! Now I find, there are corporate business plans proudly based on this research in this country with their leaders on book tours touting it. AHHHHHHHHH!Although this is not part of the movie, knowing that Jackie did create a new and safe life for her family after her tragic loss allows the viewer to be uplifted by her courage. I sure hope I can find that courage someday. I am really quite hopelessly devastated - but Jackie made me, at least for a moment, want to try to want to try to be brave.be welllisa

They really missed the mark on this one
Portman tried, but I can't get past the voice/accent. It's just wrong, and her effortful attempt to imitate Jackie's voice makes her language sound stilted. It significantly takes away from the poise and intelligence that Jackie conveyed when she spoke. The script doesn't help. For example, when responding to the narrator about what future 1st ladies will do with the items Jackie acquired for the restoration, Portman responds by saying how in the past these items could be thrown out or given away and ends it there, which makes her sound shallow and dull. In the original interview she explains that a law was passed so that these items, if unwanted, will be preserved in the Smithsonian so that their historical value will be conserved and appreciated for generations to come. Also, the way the movie goes into Jackie's experience of and reaction to the trauma of JFK's assassination seems intrusive and cruel. I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes or so and I'm disappointed I wasted my money.

Just the right heft of the veil....
I was a senior in high school, eating lunch in our cafeteria, when the news that President Kennedy had been shot was announced. The horror and shock pervaded everywhere that day. For whatever reasons Jacqueline Kennedy may have chosen to conduct the funeral for her husband, it is difficult to believe that all her efforts were entirely for herself, as she saw her husband as a head of state and included important elements that underscored this fact with a great lot of dignity. It was enriching to be reminded that there once was such a quality within the White House, as it seems to be so glaringly absent these days.Jacqueline Kennedy had her own signature by which she could let the American people into many aspects of this presidency, and during that particular time, she set the tone for a nation to mourn and then to move onward. It was important and appreciated by most of the nation. This film does a good job of defining that time and portraying the curious and turbulent avenues along which grief can travel, as well as the odd and often insensitive vortex of events that circled around it.The costume designer got the heft of Jacqui's veil just right....it was heavy, nearly opaque and the freezing wind whipped it around brutally that day. Musical scores seem to always be a difficult component of a film and the music for this one can be ham handed. It's not that this film is one of the greatest we will see and it will disturb those who wish for a fast pace and to be entertained. It's about grief and how humans can conduct themselves under its spell in an exceptional circumstance. It's a good study.

Not a Documentary but a Perspective
Many people who have reviewed this film negatively have complained that Natalie Portman's portrayal of Jackie Kennedy is off character and not precise to who she was as a person; however, these critics miss the point that this film portrays. This movie is meant to give insight about the horrors that happened to Jackie Kennedy, that in a week, she had to step into a new role and be strong for the American people. This film does a wonderful job breaking apart and making this woman more human than the legendary status that she has, and it really gives a broad idea of who she was. While the film takes artistic liberties and does portray some fictional scenes of Jackie alone, there is a point to be made about the need for these scenes, the most moving being when she is washing her face on the plane before LBJ's oath. This allows the audience to understand the magnitude of the situation. Sure, America had just lost a president, but Jackie was seated beside her husband when he was shot, she's widowed with two young children, and any plans for the future were gone in that moment. Natalie Portman does a tremendous job at portraying Jackie's fragile mental state as she's mourning her husband's death while trying to juggle the responsibility of his legacy. It's a moving movie, worth the watch as long as you're focusing more on the meaning and less on the history and truth behind it.
