A Vegan Diet Helped My Dog Get Healthy and Gain Weight
I use HALO as a crunchy topper to home made plant-based (vegan) meals for my dogs. It's the perfect compliment. My dogs love it. I started making their food after one of them, the grey/black one in the photo, got very sick with pancreatitis which then lead to her diabetes diagnosis. Since changing their diet they have had no health problems. The black dog, after getting sick and being discharged from the hospital, weighed only 12 lbs, losing 3-4 lbs in a week or so. On her plant-based diet, including the HALO topper, she's gained back most of her weight. It took 16 months but she looks back to normal now. I wish I didn't have to give her an insulin shot every 12 hours, but it's our new reality. I fantasize that I can cure her and eliminate the insulin. She's made a such dramatic recovery. My vegan dog food recipe works for me. I'll share it here and I know I'll get criticism, but bring it, I've seen how this has healed my dog. They are both doing much better on this than on a high-end dried lamb dog food.1 lb pkg frozen organic kale (thawed)1 lb pkg frozen organic green beans (thawed)1 large or 2 small cooked beets (Can be cooked, sliced, and frozen. Thaw before using)5 Tbsp nutritional yeast5 Tbsp apple cider vinegardrops of liquid smoke and Ume plum vinegar for flavor / taste (optional, but the dogs love this!)1/2 - 1 cup of water to moisten for ease of processing in the food processorMix in a food processor.Separately, hydrate 2 dry cups of Honest Kitchen Grain Free Veggie Nut and Fruit Base Mix with 4-5 cups of hot water. In a large bowl, mix the above vegetable 'sauces' together to create one ginormous bowlful of veggie sauce. It makes a lot. I freeze half of the above.Separately, hydrate a bowlful of Soy Curls from Butler Foods - I make a large batch for multiple meals. I just put in enough hot water to hydrate. At meal time, I mix 1/2 cup of the veggie sauce mix with 1 1/2 cups of hydrated Soy Curls from Butler Foods (faux chicken)I add 1/3 cup of soaked, sprouted barley (I will soak a batch of barley overnight and a day or a few days, changing the water. When softened I refrigerate it to use at feeding. Batch processing makes this easy. Just requires thinking ahead.)To this I add vitamins, minerals, and a probiotic from Dr Dobias Healing Solutions. (I also use his herbal flea shampoo and bedding spray as well.)I split the mixed 2 cups of veggie sauce, soy curls, and vitamins between the two dogs.I split 1/2 cup HALO Garden of Vegan for the topper. (Splitting 1/4 cup in the first feeding, another 1/4 in the second feeding.)I feed my dogs half their meal before the insulin shot, then half after. Like a treat - and this helps me remember that I've given the insulin shot.I do not use any chemicals on my dogs. I loath giving them vaccines, as it was probably the combination of a steroid shot, a too-rich diet of dried lamb dog food, flea meds, and vaccines that contributed to my dog getting sick. I know my recipe sounds nutty and like a lot of work. It isn't really. It's a habit I've formed, and the rewards of good times together are priceless. I keep tinkering to make meals easier and easier.p.s. Please forgive the weeds in the yard in the photo, it's spring as I write this and I've yet to weed this patch. Dr. Dobias Healing Solutions Inc. No longer a fussy, gassy, bloated, sleep-deprived little dog
UPDATE: 08.01.2015She is still doing wonderfully well, I simply cannot say enough good things about this food!Over the years my husband and I have really run the gauntlet when it comes to trying to help our poor little fussy, gassy, bloated dog to feel better. She has tried so many different special foods (for digestion, for weight control, for old age, sensitive stomachs) and with each new food we carefully introduced it into her diet with high hopes that this would finally be the one to help her, but we were always met with the same result of either maintaining her level of problems or increasing them.A few months ago she was feeling worse than ever and it was affecting her sleep so badly that she would just fuss all day and all night long. She would beg us to take her outside and we would take her for the longest walks (miles and miles) and she would either have diarrhoea throughout the walk or she wouldn't be able to get anything out at all. Either way, despite the lengthy duration of her walks, the moment that we had brought her back inside she would start desperately asking to go back out again. She also threw up regularly (even when she was on sensitive stomach food) and it would keep her up all night. The poor thing was getting next to no sleep. On top of that, she would go to her empty food bowl (after eating her full daily serving amount and then some) and would scratch at it and beg and plead for more food even when she was clearly too full already.Out of sheer desperation and desire for her comfort and our peace, I decided to try putting her on a vegetarian diet.I did all my customary extensive research and am extremely happy with the choice that I made! Her improvement was immediate and has lasted for the entire two months that we've had her on the food so far.It is truly remarkable! Her behavior changed in less than a day! Her walks last a pleasant and satisfying amount of time, she gets her business done right away (firm and normal), she sleeps through the night, she is generally peaceful throughout the day. Her bloating has gone down significantly and she is even starting to lose weight despite the fact that the food isn't even "diet".Here is what I've been feeding her:Halo Vegan Garden Medley Stew for Dogs (dry food)andNatural Balance Vegetarian Formula (canned wet food). It's is actually vegan as well, not just vegetarian.I use half the daily serving amount of each kind (so that the sum total per day is one full serving of food) and combine the two together thoroughly. Also, I split her food up into two feedings a day which means that each serving of combined food equals half of her daily serving size.I cannot stress enough the improvement that this food has made in her quality of life!I'm so happy for her and I highly recommend either or both Halo Garden Medley Stew and/or Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula!

Amazing!
SHORT VERSION: This food changed my dogs life, the ingredient list is full of foods I feel good about giving my best friend, and I couldn't give a stronger recommendation! His vet says he's as healthy and energetic as a puppy (he's almost 7) and his groomer comments on what soft fur he has.LONG VERSION: This food is life changing for my yorkie mix. Last year he was very ill, wasn't eating much, vomiting bile in the middle of the night every single night, his fur was always oily and skin was flaky, and he had an odor no matter when his last bath was. Vet kept waving off my concerns saying it was likely a food allergy and to switch things up, but the problems weren't going away no matter what food I switched him to (we tried grain free, limited ingredients, locally owned organics, you name it). I put him on a bland home cooked veggie, grain, and egg diet that seemed to be helping a little but he still wouldn't eat much of it. Finally came across halo to add to the mix. I eat plant-based and never felt great about buying meat products of questionable quality for my dog anyways so i was excited after doing plenty of research and talking to my vet that this might be a great option for my dog. This was the first food in a long time that he was excited to scarf down. His digestion seemed to improve right away, he had easy bowel movements and after maybe 1 week on the food with no vomiting since the switch and tons more energy, he coughed up a giant hairball that I assume had been obstructing his digestive tract for the last year and was finally dislodged by the more frequent BMs and all of the good stuff going through his system. Since then he has been perfectly healthy, the vet was amazed at the drastic change, he never has that dirty dog smell anymore and his fur is so soft and shiny. I could not recommend this food more, I think it literally saved his life and I'm happy to have my snuggle buddy back.

My Stella loves it!
I make some fresh food to add as a topper for this kibble. Since there are zero regulations on meat and dog food with a little research you will find out that all the meat deemed not fit human for consumption goes in pet food. This is slaughterhouse scraps and it doesn't matter what it is. Use your imagination to know how horrible it is. This cable is pure plant protein and I buy hormone antibiotic free chicken and beef with vegetables, sweet potatoes, quinoa and also a bean and vegetable mixture with chickpeas because she loves them. I add an all-around supplement powder and digestive enzyme probiotic powder. I take that much care with my own health and food so I do it for my dog because she's part of the family. Make a big batch put it in snack bags in the freezer and you can have food morning and night to top the kibble for a month with a small dog. Does not cost a lot of money even though you might be reading this and think it does. I buy everything when it's buy one get one and on sale. It starts with a great quality plant-based kibble and we love Halo.

Seemed good at first
I started feeding this to my dog who has severe allergies to eliminate all meat protein and grain protein as possible triggers. A month after she started eating it, she was still itchy, so that wasn't the problem. I thought I'd keep her on the food, though, because she liked it so much. However, after we had a bag of it in the house for more than a few days, she didn't see to like the flavor anymore. We tried freezing it when it arrived, but it still had the issue. I tried feeding it to my other dog who was always trying to eat it out of my other dog's bowl. He loved it at first, then also seemed to not like it anymore after a short time. Additionally, it made him insanely thirsty. Seeing another review saying that the food was salty makes me wonder if that was the problem. I think the fiber was also too much for him as he also got bad gas and frantically needed to poop several times a day. We switched him over to Wellness Complete Chicken and he is much happier.
