Superman: Kal (1995) #1 (DC Elseworlds)

Superman als Mittelalterheld.Wow! Leider nur auf englisch beziehbar.Super Story. Endlich mal eine Superman-Version, die sich von anderen unterscheidet und einfach "wow" ist.Wie, wenn Superman im Mittelalter auf die Erde gekommen wäre?Als Superman-Fan fand ich es natürlich schade, dass sowohl Lois L. als auch Superman von Lex getötet werden, auch wenn Superman mit letzter Kraft Lex töten kann.Man hätte da ruhig mehrere Comics bzw. eine kleine Serie draus machen können.Mehr davon!

One of my two favorite Superman Elseworld stories, being the other one Millar's "Superman Red Son." Gibbons writes a plot for moments maybe quite dramatic, almost cheesy, but it works in contrast with the evilness of Luthor. As in a dream most of the characters you already know are here but living another life in medieval England, it seems a bit after the Norman conquest. Kal is the hero, powerful and noble as Tarzan, but a bit meek or innocent. Luthor rules Lexford and the beautiful lady Loisse is his ticket to maintain his power. Kal has to overcome enormous challenges to win her and... you should read it. The colors express well the imminent sadness of the story as well. The art by Garcia-Lopez is superb, in a time of digital tracing is refreshing to see from old comics an art with expression in its brushes, with such a powerful representation of the human anatomy and majestic landscapes. I have not seen other comics drawn by the artist but I have the impression the goal was to evoke the detailed and epic character of the Prince Valiant.The violence in this comic book is unusual even for the genre of superheroes. Personally it doesn't bother me as I think it is not just an addition to generate more sales by just being edgy, but fits with what surely where hard times. But if you are a reader of happy endings and you cannot tolerate violence towards the more vulnerable, or you think showing it is a kind of endorsement then I would recommend you caution with this comic. If not I love this story, is quite remarkable, and maybe you will love it too!

Don't get me wrong. I like the idea of Superman being raised in Medieval England and forging his own indestructible sword made from Kryptonian metal. I really like this comic book up until the ending. It really is a shame that the Superman or Kal as he is known in this comic book dies at the end battling the Lex Luthor of this universe and reality and I also think that it is also a shame that the Lois Lane of this universe and reality was murdered by Luthor. But to those who still like King Arthur-related stuff I recommend this comic book.

Muy ben cómic, con dibujos muy clásicos de los años 90, la historia es muy buena y un poco conmovedora para mi.

I really enjoyed this Elseworld tale. What a great setting and great narration of story through one of the classic Superman supporting characters. The story was not as breathtaking as Superman: Red Son or Superman:War of the Worlds, but if you're looking for a good time in a medival setting I highly recommend checking it out.
