Elle [Blu-ray]

Once upon a time, Paul Verhoeven was the hottest director in Hollywood, helming such box office hits as RoboCop and Basic Instinct. But a couple of disappointments (oddly, everyone I know loves Starship Troopers and Showgirls is regarded as a camp classic) is all it takes for studios to turn their back on you these days, so Verhoeven took his talent back overseas (he was born and raised in the Netherlands and didn't start directing American movies until the mid 80s - the underrated Flesh and Blood) where his style of sex, violence, and a good dose of humor seems to work best. This is the case with Elle, a movie that would be dead serious if it was made in Hollywood by anyone else. Thankfully, it's French and helmed by Verhoeven – making it one of the more uniquely entertaining movies you're likely to come across.French actress and Academy Award nominee Isabelle Huppert ( indeed, one of the best and bravest actors currently working) stars as Michèle, who we see getting raped by a masked man (dressed all in black) in the movie's opening moments. While this horrible event would be the cause of two hours of angst for a character in an American movie, Michèle treats her rape rather clinically, although that doesn't mean she doesn't become focused on both finding ways to protect herself and well as hoping to unmask the perpetrator – who begins a game of taunting her after the events take place.Michèle works for a videogame company whose specialty is creating violent and sexually exploitive games, so she immediately begins to suspect that one of her employees (maybe a current one, perhaps a former one) is the man who raped her. Others in Michèle's circle of friends and acquaintances are also suspicious. I will confess to pinpointing who the person was as soon as his character is introduced in the movie, although I don't know if it will be that obvious to everyone who watches the film. However, the identity of the person is just the first "surprise" in the movie, as Michèle's response is far from expected and may even turn some viewers (especially females, I suspect) off. I will say that knowing who it is (or having a pretty good idea) didn't take away any of my enjoyment, which is a good indication that the film holds up to multiple viewings and is much more than a "whodunnit."The movie also has a great excuse why our lead character doesn't take her problems to the police; Michèle's father was responsible for some horrible crimes at which she was present (as a little girl). The crimes were horrendous enough that complete strangers will shout awful things at her, and one woman (early in the movie) actually throws a tray of food on her in a public restaurant. Michèle treats that moment so nonchalantly, that viewers will know it's happened to her many times before.But for all the seriousness of the subject matter here, the real surprise of Elle (which, incidentally, isn't a nickname for the main character but rather the French word for "she") is what a wicked sense of humor is has. Not in the laugh-out-loud kind of way (although I certainly did so a few times), but in a dry, subversive way. There's a great subplot here involving Michèle's son (Jonas Bloquet) and the rather questionable girlfriend (Alice Isaaz) he's chosen for himself that goes places I don't think a Hollywood movie would dare (wait until you the scene where she gives birth!).Unfortunately a lot of us avoid foreign movies because you have no desire to sit and read subtitles for two hours – I sometimes feel the same, but I encourage you to give this movie a chance. If you've loved Verhoeven's work here in the States, you'll get that same feeling with Elle. I don't know that it's the director's best movie, but it's definitely a contender.Vital Disc Stats: (The Blu-ray.)Elle arrives on Blu-ray in a standard Sony-type blue keepcase (the kind with the flap on the side you need to lift up to open the case) and contains no inserts. The 50GB Blu-ray is front-loaded with trailers for Equity, Julieta, Toni Erdmann, Maggie's Plan, and Our Little Sister. The main menu consists of a still image of actress Isabelle Huppert's character and the cat in the movie (the same image that graces the back of the keepcase's slick), with menu selections horizontally across the bottom of the screen.The Blu-ray is region-free.

Isabelle Huppert is amazing in a story that is provocatively contrived yet with a grain of truth at its base. What starts out like some Hollywood revenge fantasy veers into workplace drama, deranged family farce and of course, sexual transgression. It's got all the earmarks of classic Verhoeven: venal men, strong, if bare breasted women, perverse twists, taboo toppling. the director seems to take especial glee in humiliating just about every character in some way or another. It's ultimately a pitch black comedy, with Huppert doing her best Buster Keaton: she takes a licking and pops back up with a sort of aggressive impassivity. It revels in going to extremes, but like a Lynch, Almodovar or Cronenberg movie makes weird sense on it's own terms.The story is riffing on the phenomenon of how some victims of trauma come to find comfort, even pleasure in ritualized violence, BDSM, in this case, rape play. Huppert's character is the daughter of a notorious mass murderer grown up to be the CEO of a company that makes hyper violent video games. She seeks to dominate all around her, with mixed success, when a sexual assault puts her on a path of self discovery and acceptance. Really.Less in line with the director's more tepidly risque Hollywood output, "Elle" hearkens back to the giddy perversity of the "The 4th Man". Which makes it kind of a homecoming for Verhoeven, finally returning to making the kind of movies he was clearly put on this earth to do.

This story calls for a strong-minded, level-headed female lead and Huppert is perfect for it. I've always loved her performance but it took me a long time to make up my mind to watch this one because of the subject matter. It did not disappoint. Like many French films and unlike most Hollywood films, it has a main plot line and many sub plot lines which are just as intriguing. In the first half hour, it unfolds so well about the relationships and dynamics among the characters involved without wasting scenes to explain, just enough to keep the suspense going but not too much to insult our intelligence. Obviously we are kept on our toes all the way to the end on the question of who did it, but for me it's also about the personal struggle of finally breaking free from one's painful past and starting to move on with living. She is so fearful of reporting the assault to the police because she does not stir up the public attention of the past--there she continues to let the past influence her actions and rule her life. Spoiler alert: at one point there is a conclusion to her past (the passing of her father), after which she starts making different decisions...At the end of the day, this is a happy-ending story.Before watching it, I had vaguely remembered review words like "controversial" and thought maybe it had something to do with her attraction to the aggressor. After watching it I have to say her attraction to the aggressor (without knowing who it is at the time) precisely highlights the point for many rape victims in real life, that what constitutes a rape is without the consensus of the victim, regardless of how attractive the aggressor is.On the other hand, I thought what could be a bit controversial might be how she refuses to forgive her father (and her mother for that matter) even when they are on their deathbeds. Most movies would have them reconcile somehow, but this plot is more honest. I don't personally have such a painful past with my family to be able to directly relate but I hope this detail is validating and comforting to those who can relate, and that it is okay not to forgive those who did wrong to you, as long as this feeling empowers and liberates you, like it did her.

Baignant dans un humour noir, malaisant et malsain, cette épopée dramatique familiale est scénaristiquement un mélange de nombreux faits divers excellemment mis en scène. Si la réalité n'était pas aussi débile, on dirait que cette fiction en fait vraiment trop. Et bien après tant d'années, le scénario pourtant bien barré arrive à être en dessous de ce que l'être humain est capable de donner. L'ensemble du casting joue à merveille des tragédies de notre époque avec une naïveté déconcertante. Bien joué Paul.

Secondo me il vero soggetto suggerito dal regista gira attorno alla rabbia repressa dietro una maschera di perbenismo, sorrisi e sorrisetti, baci e bacini e feste natalizie, frecciatine velenose e via discorrendo...in quale ambito? Ma la famiglia, no?! Un'istituzione che io giudico "mostruosa", ma non voglio generalizzare, sia chiaro. Il film è un'opera d'arte.

Love this movie. This could have been just a decent somewhat exploitation thriller, but Isabelle Huppert elevates it, making her character real, and making her characters personality and questionable choices and reactions believable. You might not like what the movie, or what the actions of various characters, says about men and women, but genuinely surprisingly plot twists and character actions make it a very interesting film.

Sie geht nicht zur Polizei, nimmt ein Bad, beseitigt zertümmertes Porzellan und Glas am Tatort, das Geschehen erzählt sie nur im engsten Freundeskreis, der ihr rät, zur Polizei zu gehen, Sie lehnt dies unter dem Hinweis auf die Vergangenheit des Vaters, der gerade ein Begnadigungsgesuch eingereicht hat, ab. Sie befürchte, dass das Verbrechen von damals, das die geamte Presse beherrschte, wieder hochkochen würde.Weitere Probleme ergeben sich für die resolute Firmenchefin: der Sohn ist ein Schluffi, seine schwangere Freundin ein schreckliches Biest, welches ihn barsch rumkommandiert und dauernd anschnauzt, das später geborene Baby ist ganz sicher nicht von ihm.In der Firma kursieren auf den PCs der Mitabeiter Filmausschnitte eines PC-Spiels, in denen das Opfer einer Vergewaltigung durch ein Alien mit Michèles Gesicht versehen ist.Ihre Mutter hat einen Lover, der ihr Enkel sein könnte, sie lebt ihre Sexualitüt ohne Scham aus und wird von Michèle finanziell unterstützt.Bei einem erneuten Überfall trotz ausgetauschter Schlösser gelingt es Michèle, eine Schere zu ergreifen, die dem schlagenden Mann die Hand durchbohrt. Sie reißt ihm die Maske vom Kopf und - kennt den Täter, der schon einmal Objekt ihrer sexuellen Phantasie war, als sie sich selbst befriedigte.Wieder geht sie nicht zur Polizei, sie behandelt ihn in Gesellschaft weiterhin völlig normal, lässt sich sogar nach einem Autounfall, bei dem sie sich das Knie verletzt hat, vom Unfallort abholen, nachdem sie andere Bekannte nicht erreicht hat.Michèle lässt sich auf ein gefährliches Spiel ein: Während bei einem Besuch bei ihm ihr Sohn, von der Freundin inzwischen aus der von Mama mitfinanzierten Wohnung geworfen, auf einer Couch seinen Rausch ausschläft, lässt sie sich im Keller seine Heizungsanlage zeigen, sicher ahnend was folgen wird: Eine erneute Attacke, sie macht mit, aber der Täter "funktioniert" offensichtlich nur, wenn er schlagen und Gewalt ausüben kann, Michèle macht trotzdem mit !!!Der erneute Überfall in ihrer Wohnung etwas später endet für den Mann tödlich.Erotikthriller? Nein, der Film ist ein ganz anderes Kaliber als Verhoevens "Basic Instinct", bei dem Sharon Stone ungeachtet der berühmt- berüchtigten Beinschere wirklich Erotik pur ausstrahlte. Hier geht es um Perversion und Machtspiele, sadomasochistische Triebe, gestörte Beziehungen, Betrug unter Freunden, und eine Michèle, die mit dem Feuer spielt! Laut dem ersten Rezensenten war der Film ursprünglich als Hollywood-Produktion geplant:. Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, Marion Cotillard, Diane Lane, Julianne Moore und Carice von Houten lehnten die Hauptrolle ab, Jennifer Jason Leigh's Namen war den Finanziers nicht zugkräftig genug.Welch Glück!!! Der Film wurde dann eine frranzösisch-belgisch-deutsche Koproduktion, und mit Isabelle Huppert fand Verhoeven die ideale Michèle. Überzeugender als diese Ausnahmespielerin hätte m.E. keine andere diese Rolle derart authentisch wirkend spielen. können. In jeder Szene dominiert sie und fasziniert uns, ohne sich in den Vordergrund zu spielen, wie in vielen ihrer Filmen auch, sie beherrscht die Leinwand. Ausnahmen die ich kenne sind F.Ozon's "8 Frauen" mit weiteren französischen Schauspielikonen und Claude Chabrols "Biester", für den Huppert ihren ersten César erhielt, Sandrine Bonnaire hätte ihn genauso verdient, zwei großartige Schauspielerinnen auf Augenhöhe.Ca 50 Filmpreise , 60 Nominierungen und der zweite César für Huppert bei insgesamt 16 Nominierungen sind keine Garantie für einen guten Film. In Deutschland seien die Reaktionen gemischt gewesen, und auch hier in den Rezensionen wird der Film von manchen zerrissen:"Vergewaltigt, gebadet, gefummelt!"Und tatsächlich ruft Michèles Verhalten nach der Vergewaltigung erst einmal Unverständnis hervor. Nicht wenige Vergewaltigungsopfer sind derart traumatisiert, dass sie nicht an Beweismittel denken, sondern erst einmal baden oder duschen, um die körperliche Beschmutzung loszuwerden, und bei vielen bleibt auch lange oder gar dauerhaft die Psyche "beschmutzt". Wir verstehen dies selbstbewußte energische erfolgreiche Frau zunächst nicht, aber im Lauf des Filmes werden die Brüche in ihrer Biographie, der Mördervater und das Foto von ihr, die Trennung vom Ehemann, der sie geschlagen hat (zeitlich vor dem Film), und ofensichtlich auch eine gewisse masochistische Neigung erkennbar.Ich kann diesen ungewöhnlichen Film mit einer der großartigsten Schauspielerin der Gegenwart nur dringend empfehlen.Paul Verhoeven hat nach den Erfahrungen in Frankreich verkündet, dort weitere Filme drehen zu wollen, hoffen wir es !Doc Halliday
