The Future of Teaching: And the Myths That Hold It Back

Trads v Progs in Education - the picture is much more complex
Useful insights into the DIKR (Direct Instruction Knowledge Rich) agenda. Biased in its approach and would have benefitted from more on ‘progressive’ shortcomings and how they are influencing contemporary education. Also more on contextual influences such as digital and social expectations. But overall worthwhile to support understanding the conflicting nature of educational discourse and how research is viewed within this

Stunning book
As a creative teacher of 25 years I have watched creative subjects become battered and stripped bare by a government that places all its hopes for equality of making kids more knowledgeable. As Guy says in the book, the problem with this is not that it’s wrong, but that it’s only half right. I agree, we did denigrate knowledge for a long time in education, but the pendulum swing has gone way too far. Creativity, critical thinking and problem solving aren’t outliers they are vital for our children’s futures, yet they are being left to chance by short-sighted policy makers that claim they have neuroscience on their side, that the research is unequivocal.Guy’s book is the perfect foil to this folly, because he dismantles their so-called rock solid research and rips it apart with clinically delivered, neuroscientific evidence. Many educators have been sold a dummy, they are riding a bandwagon that is crashing into a wall, because common sense, logic and now the neuroscience, isn’t on their side. The truth, is that knowledge is one vital learning domain of many out there and the others are taking a hammering. We are losing something really profoundly important in this country - creativity, and I fear it will be too late to get it back if we don’t act soon.Let’s hope Guy’s book is the panacea we need.
