Gritty Southern Christmas Anthology: A Collection of Short Stories

Christmas in Real-Time
The pretty seasonal cover, and the word 'gritty' drew me to this anthology. I had no idea what to expect as I looked through the author bios in the back. This book contains real writings that reflect our times with its unique trials and tribulations. I was taken with all the work here. To mention a few let me say that RACIALLY CONTENT AT CHRISTMASTIME was a fresh look at Christmas from the point of view of a black female writer, and her timely poem gave me a big jolt of happiness. HOOVES AND HOPE started off very dark, as it tells a tale of one young girl from the care system who is experiencing an unusual Christmas. This story is strong and purposeful with it's surprise ending. A HOMELESS CHRISTMAS is bleak, as the title suggests, but written with truth and clarity of that terrible situation many people face year in and year out. The author treats his characters with respect, and the story ends on a hopeful note. POLICE CHIEF BILLY is a coming of age story told in the voice of a young girl living in an army family, and the shock they must face on a particular Christmas. It also sends up the message that it's crucial to tell people when they've done good, because that will extend out into the world. And God knows the world needs all the good it can get. This is a beautifully eclectic book. I enjoyed every story and the varying points of view.

Left wanting more!
This anthology reminds me of the candy I grew up with: Eat Some Now, Save Some for Later. Starting off, I promised myself one story a day. Well, broke that one in first day's reading! Through the rest of the readings (several a sitting), I wanted to read some now, but save some for later. Sadly, the end arrived. Give us more!!!
