A Man And A Woman

Rediscovering a treasure
"A Man and a Woman" is a one-off live project by Dionne Warwick and Issaac Hayes - two legends of American soul music. Released in 1977, at a time when both artists were not faring too well commercially but were still able to sell out venues around the country, "A Man and a Woman" documents the last night of their 1976 joint tour at Atlanta's Fox Theater. Originally released as a double album on Isaac's fledgling vanity Hot Buttered Soul imprint, the release would provide both artist a much needed commercial boost, scoring a top 20 hit on the soul album charts. "A Man and a Woman" proves to be a solid listening experience some 30 odd years later, proving that good black don't crack! Both artists are shown in their best light along with both their touring bands in top form. Song selections range from a sampling of some of their best known hits, including their most recent recordings from the time; along with medlies of then current pop hits given a soulful twist. The chemistry between Isaac and Dionne evident on album would lead to future successful collaborations between the two (i.e. Deja Vue, performed by Dionne and produced by Isaac in 1980). When you stop to think about it, the pairing of these two artists was really a genius stroke - Hayes had built his solo career with successful appropriation of a few Warwick covers, tunes which he elevated to new rhapsodic heights (i.e. Walk on By and I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself). Warwick with Hayes, as a performing partner, was inspired to display a more earthy and sensuous side to her persona which had yet to be captured in her recordings. This lp had been tucked away in my collection gathering dust and it took the soulmusic.com reissue for me to turn my attention back to it. 30 years ago, I was an adolescent who did not fully appreciate the real musicality and artistry that is on displayed, now as a middle aged adult I am hearing this with new ears. This is required listening for aspiring performing artists so that they can learn how it is done. Overall I believe this to be an excellent record and a worthwhile entry in both artists' discography.

A musical treasure.
It was great to have this on cd. The recording quality is not the greatest, but having it on cd is nice. It is a great to hear these wonderful artist interact. I saw them in Detroit. The " I say a little prayer /By the time I get to Phoenix duet alone is worth the price of admission. The "Feelings" duet is off the charts. Two great artists, one great deal.

Music to your ears!
I first purchased this album (I know, dated medium) at a swap meet in the early eighties and loved it. Over the years I divested myself of vinyl due to space concerns. One song from this album made me miss it so bad that I had to purchase it again. The version of "Chocolate Chip" is enough for anyone to want this. Upon reacquainting myself with the cd, the memories came flowing back to me. Timeless music that makes your feet want to move. Come buy a memory.

Dazzling Duet
It is certainly an enjoyable pleasure everytime I play this 2 LP set of A Man and a Woman. I wish I was old enough back in the day to attend this performance when it was recorded for this album. Issac and Dionne certainly showcased a vibrant versatility for a variety of songs as a duet as well as performing as a solo artist. Each of their soulful interpretations for all of the songs makes A Man and a Woman a very enjoyable album to listen to.

Sexy Rich Voices
I have always wanted to get this album and am so glad to receive this in the mail today! The luxurious combined voices of Dionne and Isaac is gorgeous. It is so refreshing to be able to just hear real-voices singing. I can feel the love, the chemistry this pair have. If I had seen the concert, I'm sure it would be electrifying! Soooooooo sexy.

Da wären zunächst einmal die gescheit ausgesuchten Songs: egal ob Paul McCartneys "My Love", Glen Campbells "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", Olivia Newton-Johns "Have You Never Been Mellow", Warwicks Nr. 1-Hit "I say a little prayer", das laszive "Body Language", die zahlreichen Soulpretiosen wie "This will be an everlasting love", "ThatŽs the way I like It", "Love will keep us together" , oder das das Publikum zur Raserei treibende "Chocolate Chip" aus der Feder Isaac HayesZ - Warwicks Sexappeal und Hayes geschmeidiger Bariton, eine grandios groovende Rhythmusband, gospelnde Backgroundsängerinnen, und ein durch maßvolle Arrangements clever eingesetztes Orchester machen aus all den Vorlagen brillante Neufassungen und "A Man And A Woman" zu einem wahrhaftig hinreißenden Soulalbum. Warum dieses Meisterwerk erst jetzt, 35 Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen, als CD veröffentlicht wurde, wird vermutlich immer ein Rätsel bleiben. Aber besser zu spät als nie.

wow another great archive find
Another life time ago I had a vinyl pressing of this; it was a double album presented in a gatefold sleeve and I played it til it was practically dust. I had not been a fan of "live" recordings until it was proved to me that sometimes that is all that is possible.Maybe not the most obvious coupling, although Dionne seems to have made a career out of unlikely (and always brilliant) duets, the two voices blend like chocolate and coffee ~ sweet & hot and they sound as if they are having a ball, is there a visual recording of this concert anywhere?Whoever is behind the rerelease of these original soul albums deserves the musical equivalent of the Nobel prize; this particular 36 year old recording sounds as fresh (even fresher) than on its original outing.Any fan will have their stand out favourites from this concert ~ mine is the duet medley "I just dont know what to do / walk on by" as the reading feels so new even after such a history of both tracks. There is, for me, a kind of completion finding this again after all these years ~ a true gift of an ageing Dionne fan!
