Acme Thunderer Plastic Whistle

Acme 560 whistle sets a high standard to which all other whistles should be compared. It is super loud and super easy to blow. The pea provides a confident "trill" that no pea-less whistle can duplicate. Compared to the Acme 660, the Acme 560 is slightly louder, slightly lower pitch, slightly bigger, and about as easy to blow. Both of these whistles hurt my ears badly if I don't cover my ears, but the Acme 560 is not as annoying because of its deeper tone.I consider the Storm to be my loudest whistle, but it's so huge that I rarely carry it. Also, it's not like the Storm is substantially louder than the Acme 560, just slightly louder to some people. The JetScream sucks compared to so many other whistles (including this Acme 560). The Victorinox Distress (aka, TOPS) has a deep tone that is not loud within 100 meters or so, but apparently deep tones carry far, thereby making it a specialty whistle for the wilderness.I usually carry the Acme 560, and sometimes carry the Acme 660. If I decide to carry a pea-less whistle, then the Acme 636 is my first choice.

I got this for two reasons. The wife goes running in the morning when we go to Europe, and I wanted her to have a signalling device just in case. And we will be hiking on Snowdon next March, and I understand it gets foggy up there, so I wanted the rescuers to be able to find us when we slip on some frozen slate and end up in a ravine. Be warned, don't blow this thing indoors. I know you won't be able to resist now that I've said that, just don't come crying to me when your ears ring for an hour. It is loud, it weighs nothing at all, and it feels very solid. I wish it came with a breakaway lanyard.

Crazy loud with little effort. I have and have tested many whistles (as a Cub Master). I purchased this one as a plastic alternative to my metal thunderer for the winter months. This one is significantly louder with dramatically less effort. Stunning. Nearly all of the ACME Thunderers have a great sound, easily modulated by position of thumb and forefinger. And it's a better sound for sports than the Fox 40's (Classic, Sonik, etc), and the 560 (this model) is easier to blow.

Can be very loud with little breath. I got it for my mother in law. She doesn't get around well and is very soft spoken. My father-in-law is almost completely deaf. She was easily able to blow this to get his attention from another room if necessary.

This whistle cuts through but isn't shrill at low volume like most of the Fox whistles. It's great for lifeguards who need to get a swimmer's attention without sounding angry. It's easy to blow and plenty loud if you want it to be. The whistle arrived as promised and I'd buy from the seller again.

I bought several Acme whistles. They are ALL LOUD, LOUD, LOUD. Can't go wrong with any of them. And made in England is a nice plus.
