The 39 Steps (Classics Illustrated)

Fun!
A comic book version of a great Hitchcock movie. Nothing pretentious here, nor much in the way of blood and gore. Just a great tale illustrated well.Comic book versions of novels or movies can't help but omit details: if they get the heart of the story right it's unfair to criticize in this regard. Could this or that nuance from the Hitchcock flick been included? Sure. But nevertheless, a fun read and a treat to the eyes. Not all comic books manage to accomplish what's been done here. Capturing the flavor of a well-known movie or great novel, given the constraints of the comic format, must be more difficult than it seems, given the evidence of the marketplace. Without getting into specific examples, suffice it to say there are numerous comic books (AKA "graphic novels") that fail to convey the essence of the film or book upon which they are based.

It's not the same Classics illustrated stuff we used to read during our schooldays. The illustrations are not very enticing, though the cover is.

New to me
This is a new edition to classics illustrated, which I've been collecting for over 50 years. The quality is very goodand it's gone straight into my collection. Four stars because it could be a little cheaper.

THE 39 STEPS CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED
Generally I like and enjoy a trip down memory lane with "Classics Illustrated", . However I found this one disapointing. The drawings were too medern for my taste. The plot, whilst basically true, did change dramatically in setting the story AFTER WW2 with Hannay fighting to prevent WW3....WHY?? Finally, the characters were either new or totally wrong. A miss, but plenty others available are well worth investigating, and getting. Good quality repros and a fair price in my opinion.
