Romance with a twang.
There are a lot of layers to this single point of view romance. You can read it and ignore, but you'd be missing important things, like the ways and whys Patch fostered his hatred of his childhood, and how come he hates Tucker but is drawn to him, and why Tucker tries so hard to be nice to this ornery young man first time they see each other again, even though apparently Tucker is horrible. Baggage galore. If you have trouble with the way Patch speaks, and Tucker, then pay attention to where Patch is, his choices. Every setting speaks to his state of mind. This is masterful storytelling. It's all from Patch is dragged spitting and clawing back into his childhood town to deal with his parents' funeral and the sale of the farm. Nothing about his evolution is easy or simple or even clear to him most of the time. Particularly his messed-up obsession with Tucker. Many of the less-glowing reviews of this novel centered on the dialect of Southern that is rural east Texan. I'm from rural Montana, so the mannerisms and a little of their slang was familiar. The dialog did get a bit murky for me now & then. I may have missed a thing or two. But it's all clear enough in context, given the personalities, and would've lost something important had the author not stuck with rural east-Texas colloquialisms.I have never seen so many ways of saying "cock" in one book in my life. The sex scenes were unexpected in that only what Tucker wants that's shockingly new to Patch is detailed. I liked that.I loved the damn dog. :)I saw one review that seemed critical of how it ends. This is, ahem, a romance. Take away the happy-for-now or happily-ever-after, and it's not a romance. That reviewer's blaming their reaction on the writer, when the reviewer didn't understand what they were reading. Tsk.

Dy-no-MITE! ...
Stick with this one through a first few chapters where you get to hate Tucker Briggs and wonder why in the heck Patrick (Patch) is fascinated by his boyhood crush. Because there comes an explosive scene that is so searing in its sexual heat and so unexpected in the way its conducted that you will be searching all over the floor for the lump in your throat that flew out of your face when it is over.Look, this is a book based on deep, unabashed, filthy and roaring sexual attraction. The 43-year-old Tucker and the 22-year-old Patch could not be a more incongruous coupling, but when you get through all the history and machinations surrounding these two, and the East Texas town in which this tale takes place, you will not put it down except to breathe deeply. The thing that holds it together, for me at least, is the brilliant use of Texas idioms and dialect throughout. Damon Suede has created a milieu and scene after scene which defines the territory, and allows Tucker and Patch to mark their territories accordingly.Shocking, surprising, salacious. Get it fast.

Recommended with a caveat (spoilers)
Top notch writing mechanics and realistic plot for the genre. But I’ve got to give this 5 stars simply on the author’s depiction of Tucker. I know guys like this, grew up around them (although not cowboys). Mr. Suede has written truth with him and doesn’t shy from a whole characterization of bad with good. The relationship with Patch doesn’t gloss over problems. The caveat is personal. My hard limits include people who keep having kids without the least attempt to parent. And do it multiple times. Just spoiled the character for me. This doesn’t mean I think Mr. Suede should have written it differently - nothing false here. But by the end of this story I didn’t really care about Tucker’s HEA.I’m glad I read this book. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a more realistic character in the genre. But I won’t read it again, unlike Hot Head.

The most unlikely of pairs proves possible
Let me get my teeny tiny issues with the book out of the way First: I struggled a bit suspending disbelief that these two could overcome such amazing obstacles, but damn if Suede proved me wrong. And the angst level remained incredibly high to the point I struggled to get past it. BUT! This being my first Suede read, I was won over despite my tiny issues. Suede created a reunion story so unlikely that when it became clear these men were in love, it was so perfectly innocent and heartwarming despite the muck these two had spent their lives in that I was nearly cheering audibly! The setting changed from bleak to beautiful as Patch’s eyes were opened to the truth of his feelings. Tucker was one flawed character to be sure, which made him finding happiness all the more wonderful.

This was different!
This book definitely took me for a ride. I felt like I was in Texas on the farm. The sex scenes were unbelievably hot and the story flowed really well. The only negative for me was the dialogue was hard to follow sometimes. It was all very authentic Texas slang (I imagine). But, I had to read very slowly sometimes to even understand what was being said. I would still highly recommend it, just take your time!

Sweet, hot, and a gorgeous look at Texas men and those who love them
What can I say about Damon Suede that hasn't been said before by his devoted readers? That he is a king god hella good writer? That he crafts detailed, marvelous romances that are pyroclastically hot and incredibly real at the same time? That I want to write like him when I grow up? This is a story of a Texas boy made good in NYC who comes back to the family ranch after a tragedy, but it's so much more than that. It's about growing up, and taking a good, hard look at your own prejudices, and being brave enough to open your heart even though it may hurt like hell. Like sweet tea and good barbecue, this book will nourish your heart.

You are one of the best M/M writer out there
Damn Damon!! You are one of the best M/M writer out there. This book is something I never knew I neede in my life. So hot and at very important times so emotional. These characters are fighting their own demons while also trying to connect to each other and get over the past. It's such a beautiful story. If I could I would give 10 stars!

Just a little too redneck
I really like Damon and have read several of his books. This one was tough to get through. The characters didn't really hold my attentions, and I am grew up in a small town. I think the city kid could have had a lot more depth and nuance just like he did with the farmhand.

Loved this sweet, sexy, mildly kinky & v angsty May-Dec romance.
This has definitely replaced the author's Hot Head (loved the subtle nod to it, btw) as my new number one Damon Suede book. Alas, however much I adored HH’s Dante and Griff, they were a friends to lovers romance, and that just doesn't yank my crank half as much as a filthy-hot enemies to lovers does. All that pent up (no pun intended) passion and rage? It’s hands down my fave romantic trope. And this baby had everything I’m crazy for all rolled into the one terrifically-written book. Enemies to lovers, May-Dec (around a 20yr age gap), the ever-crucial slow burn, and a whiff of kink..mostly edging (although performed by a ninja, lol) and a little light bondage, nothing remotely hardcore, although the sex scenes between Tucker and Patch were nothing if not damn near pornographic! Truly some of the best I've read. And as for Tucker’s panty-melting filth-talk?..needs its own book <3.Yeah, I'm definitely more than a little in love with him...jeez, look at the book cover ;P . He's a forty-something, handsome, charismatic, rough-around-the-edges cowboy, who’s granted, also been a world class philandering manwh*re in his time, but that soon changes when reacquainted with his (now deceased) best friend’s son, 22yo Patch, who’s returned home for the first time in 7 years to attend his parents funeral, sell the family farm, and then hot-foot it back to New York and his frenetically-paced lifestyle of modelling and DJing. Well that’s the plan, until all those confused feelings he secretly harboured for Tucker, in his teens, come racing back, and he's caught up between his love and loathing for the older man.If you’re not a fan of angst, forget it, as this is classic slow burn, will-they-won't-they stuff. Not to mention the first 20%? of the book was virtually dedicated to Patch’s incessant soapbox rant about how much he resented and couldn't wait to escape his childhood, his parents, his hometown, and of course Tucker – who inadvertently and unbeknownst to himself, made Patch's life a living hell. TBH, it took me a while to warm to Patch, as he did appear rather bitter and joyless initially, and I found I just couldn't relate to his character at all. But I had a sharp turnabout in opinion, when his sweet, fun and vulnerable side manifested, all thanks to his kinky cowboy. There’s no doubt these guys brought out the very best in one another. They were of course very caring and loving men, but equally deeply flawed and who unquestionably ballsed-up and hurt each other on occasion too, and who no doubt will again…'cause that's life. But their frailties only made them more appealing and authentic imo, and is what ultimately kept me rooting for them throughout. This was a beautiful love story, and one I know I'll reread many times. Recommended.

A Bit Disappointed
Having read Hot Head and the very positive reviews about this book, I had really high hopes for Lickety Split and was looking forward to read it. However I was a bit disappointed. I couldn't quite get into the flow of it so struggled to get lost in the story. Maybe I'm a bit dim but I found it hard to truly understand some of Patch's self talk and his feelings towards Tucker when they were in New Orleans or at the gravesite. It's probably me but the book didn't live up to my expectations.

A literary F*@# book
This is probably the most classy and intense porn I’ve ever read. But this is no one handed reader; it’s full on well drawn LITERATURE! There are no bad sex scenes here, the toe-curling is of an entirely different derivation. If you thought HotHead was a “swell read” you’ll possibly be disappointed here, this is a distinct and exceptionally classy step up. I’ll brush my Suede in this direction thank you- more please!

One of my first on kindle
This was one of my first books on kindle and I loved it. It is very sexy In a masculine way. Since then I have read thousands (literally) of gay fiction books and four of Damon Suede's still top my list of favourites.I have read this for the third time now. There are so many brilliant moments in the writing that capture a moment, or a place, or an atmosphere.

Deleted
This will be the first time I've deleted a book from my Kindle. I get that men have sex with each other. The first time that occurs in a book I may tolerate reading all the details, but by the third time it becomes totally boring. Lickety Split, I'm going to delete it now having read only a few chapters. This is such a disappointment after having watching a Youtube interview with the author.
