GREAT TOOL!
I have a huge industrial one just like this, I use it a lot for huge pots of stock but for many things it was way too big. I ordered this smaller version of the same thing and I use it constantly and love it! The size is perfect for daily kitchen use. All my friends borrow it and plan to order one too. It is very sturdy and well made it also washes easily. I use it for stock, removing seeds from cooked fruit and vegies for canning, pies and for making puree or just use as a colander or strainer. It measures from the end of the handle to the end of the strainer 17 1/2'' not including the hook which is another 3/4''. The inside opening of the strainer is 8'' across and the depth top to bottom is 9 1/2''. So even though it is much smaller then I am use too it is not a small strainer it is just the right size. The hook opposite the handle is great to hold this in place over a deep pot or bowl. This is a rigid strainer with no flex so you can use a cone pestle nicely with it. It is a very useful and necessary kitchen tool. A+ quality!

Not fine and not mesh
I wish Amazon would put actual specifications on their web site for products like this. It's hard to tell from the photos just what you are getting. It turns out the so-called "mesh" is actually punched holes in sheet metal. That much one can probably see in the online photo, if you look closely, so it is not my main issue with this item. The main problem is the "fine" part since the holes measure about 1.4mm in diameter, huge in comparison to my real mesh strainer with web spacing of 0.5mm, both measured with a digital vernier caliper, and that is not even my finest mesh. I have another strainer at about 0.3mm that I typically use to skim foam when I first start making a new broth or stock.I think this chinoise strainer is OK for a first pass to get the heavy solids, but I would still want to do a final pass with my 0.5mm strainer for a good clear broth or sauce preparation. On the whole, I decided to return it because my coarse mesh strainer has 1.5mm mesh, so almost the same as this so-called "fine mesh" chinoise.

Solid, good size, perfect for home use
This is a china cap, not a chinois. Solid cone of perforated metal, not mesh. Great for straining bouillon and things of that nature; won't provide the same level of smoothness and consistency that a true chinois will give you. Of course, the reason I got it was mainly for straining bouillon, custard, and soup, so it's perfect for my purposes. What I like the most is that it can put up with a fair amount of abuse, which is one of my chief criteria whenever I'm buying any new piece of kitchen equipment. My only complaint is that the handle is just a little bit too wide for my admittedly tiny little hands; I may just end up using vice grips to pinch it a little bit closer together. For the price, a great entry-level china cap, great for china cap sort of things. But don't think it's a chinois, and don't think it's mesh.

Takes the mess out of straining chicken stock
This works SO well for straining chicken stock. I used to battle with cheesecloth, conventional strainers, etc. This device takes the mess out of the process and does an excellent job of straining. It is durable and easy to clean. It is, however, a bit difficult to store because of its awkward size. Well worth finding a place in my cupboard though! If you make homemade stock, I highly recommend this product.

Sturdy, Well Built
This is well built and sturdy. The inward curve on the top makes the choice of wooden pestel/roller a little difficult as some of them have an issue with the handle interfering with the top of the cone and hence not making contact further down. The "mesh" is really punched holes in the metal - this is fine for my usage - straining stocks etc. to remove larger pieces of vegetable/fish/beef etc. This is definitely not a really fine strainer that some cooking tasks require. For this I then step down to a cheese cloth making clear stocks. It is of course quite a large device and so you need a reasonable sized space to store.

I’m not incredibly disappointed
This product is advertised as a “China Cap Chinoise Strainer, Mesh, Stainless Steel.” I have to admit I was a little confused by the ad. I suppose every chinoise is a china cap, but certainly, not every china cap is a chinoise. A chinoise, as I understand (I certainly invite anyone to correct me), is a fine mesh. It is designed for the kind of straining that a regular china cap can’t produce. This product is not a chinoise; it is simply a china cap. It’s a…nice china cap, I suppose. My disappointment is tempered by the fact that I didn’t even own a china cap before; now I do. I’ll keep looking for a chinouse.

Useful kitchen tool
This chinoise strainer comes in handy in the kitchen. It's fairly easy to use and to clean. My only complaint is that it's a bit cumbersome for my small hands.
