Fun read, part of history.
I don't think Golitsyn's theories make sense if you take them as one big strategy over many decades. First, there is no chance that the Soviet Union, which was a legitimate superpower, voluntarily gave up its control over its satellite countries in order to play into a plot to deceive the west into helping them rebuild stronger than before -- since they're objectively weaker today than they were in the last century. In the first decade of the new century, they had a failed invasion of Georgia, and in more recent times, they embarrassed themselves in Ukraine. There are far too many setbacks with much too few strategic successes for this to have been a 30 years-long plan to do what China has done much more effectively in the same period of time without pussyfooting around. China's ascension to superpower status has completely discredited Golitsyn's theories. Russia is simply a country that knows that its main enemy will never invade or attack it, so it is constantly engaging in espionage and disinformation (which are among the few things it is good at) to mask the fact that its government and military are dysfunctional and inept. Russian leaders spend their days trying to overcome their own incompetence and corruption, and if not for their nuclear stockpile, their country would have been invaded and conquered long ago. I think Golitsyn misjudged his own country and a handful of academics failed to look at the big picture. The only other explanation I can think of is that he ran out of actual leads to give the CIA, so he managed to convince Angleton that his methodology could predict all future provocations and deceptions. It is comical to suggest that modern Russia is analogous in any way to Lenin's Soviet Union.I enjoyed reading the book though.

Important, Sometimes difficult, Read
An old book but a great read. A frightening read in that it lays out exactly what we are living with today. The Author, a former KGB operative, defector, lays out in detail the art of disinformation. He details the history, how the communists used it, gives historical examples and helps one understand the problem we face every day. The value of reading this book is to see how 'disinformation' is used in our lives today. It is apparent in our everyday news. A sometimes dry read but well worth it if you care about what is happening today.

Freedom's important to you? Then it's a must read!!!
They've taken deceiit to a whole new level, their plan seems so elaborate, and them so patient and determined.Frankly, it's quiet frightening, and if this was'nt bad enough news, don't count on our own autorities to do anything about it.I'm convinced our political leaders are either deaf, blind or part of it.Definitely a good read.John Philip

The leach grows fatter.
It's pretty interesting read. It's kinda sad how the history of socialism and communism are cast aside and outright denied. The Potekmen Village all over again. Everyone today knows only capitalism and are direct beneficiaries of it yet embrace an ideology that lives off of capitalism like a leach. A leach that cannot survive on its own merits.
