Boring and irritating
Makes no sense, it's not at all horror but sci - fi fantasy, idiotic choices and frustrating plot points. Done

A creepy slow burn
This is my first Chuck Wendig and came highly recommended. I think I have found my next favourite author. After all, there are two wolves in you.

No Accident, this book is great
This is my first time reading Chuck Wendig and I was impressed with the pace and tone of this book. It's creepy, atmospheric, sprawling and at times heartbreaking, but always entertaining. I will definitely be searching out more of his work.

Fantastic as always
Chuck Wendig's The Book of Accidents is absolutely enthralling. I pre-ordered it, so I started reading it the day it was published, July 19th, 2121. I have now read it three times! (review created 8/27/21)Mr. Wendig has a very charming writing style. Without sacrificing any timing or mood, little touches of humor or atmosphere are sprinkled throughout. He writes in third person and where he writes about a character, the writing has the character of the character, if you will. For instance, when writing a scene with Maddie, there are a lot of swear words because Maddie swears even in her thoughts. The Book of Accidents is a story about a family, but it is also a story about the whole world, and possibly even the universe as we know it. So the readers know that if the family can't get out alive, neither can anyone else, anywhere, ever. Mr. Wendig isn't the sort of writer that doesn't let bad things happen to good characters, but he's not GRR Martin, killing off anyone the readers love, either.I think the genre is best described as speculative fiction. There is magic and there are supernatural events and characters, but it wouldn't be what you would think of if you heard "urban fantasy". It's also a page-turning psychological thriller. The story sucks you in quickly, but even after knowing how it turned out, I still inhaled it an additional two times. I'll admit I am a re-reader, but usually not three times in 6 weeks. And I'll read it again and again, I'm sure, over the years.tl;dr Great book! If you already know you like Chuck Wendig's writing, I promise you'll love this.

an unqualified pleasure
I'm not a horror fan and only bought this because it's Wendig. But he does deliver. The writing is very good - maybe not his absolute best, lacking the real snap and invention of a Miriam Black or Mookie Pearl book, but better than 95% of the books you'll read. The story moves at great pace and is well put together, chopping quickly between threads in a way that never allows you to get bored. And that story is good: big invention, sharp characters with snappy dialogue, and lots of evocative events and images, as they struggle with an ancient evil. There are maybe shades of Stephen King (It and The Shining) but it doesn't really read like King, has a much punkier feel. The only limitation is the usual one with this author: this flies pretty fast, drawing its characters like vivid charcoal sketches - but, finally, without too much depth, and as a result the book skates over them and their lives. It doesn't take you on a journey. But that is the inevitable outcome of fast, slangy, snappy storytelling like this, I suppose, and King-like explorations of communities would just slow things down. Overall, a pretty unqualified pleasure.A side note: I see some reviewers criticise the author for 'pushing his politics in your face.' What politics? The fact that he mentions global warming? Him saying 'poverty is pain'? These are hardly challenging ideas. If you think them too controversial, maybe you should consider what politics you yourself are bringing to your reading.

Round like a circle like a spiral like a wheel within a wheel...
Part body horror, part ghost story, part apocalypse and part manual of post childhood trauma; Chuck Wendig's latest will burrow under your skin and deep into your mind with great ease.Exploring the idea of cyclical abuse on personal, environmental + spiritual levels, the characters of Oliver, Nate, Maddy, Jake & Jed (along with Fig & Caleb) all take on monumental roles in the battle to overcome. That all the names have Biblical backgrounds is not lost on me, nor that the concept of honouring your parents by obeying them is a recurring theme shown to be flawed.Underscoring everything, the idea that empathy is not a flaw; and that caring local as well or even instead of global, is a good thing.Thoroughly recommend it for fans of Paul Tremblay + Stephen King.
