The Art of Fashion Draping

Experienced only need to buy
Definitely a book for the experienced sewer...not a book for those who are of average skill who dont want a challenge. If you aspire to improve your designing skills and or pattern making techniques, or just to understand how draped garments and their patterns work, this book will appeal to you. A degree in math or engineering would be helpfuk! : ) Barb W

Excellent first book on draping
I have been around sewing all my life and I wanted to branch into draping because I end up redesigning all the patterns I get anyway. 3 dimensional art makes so much more sense to me over 2 dimensional art (draping vs flat patterns). I recognized Connie's name from scouring pattern books and hunting for online information and so when I saw this book and it was so much cheaper than the rest of the books on the subject, I bought it. It seems like a very good introductory course, complete with glossary terms and great illustrations. My only complaint is that there are a few slight typos in the book, some that I have found and some that the former owner found (who, by the way, obviously had this book as a textbook for a class on the subject) and so it seems like they should have proofread the final version a little better before publishing. Also, the seller I got the book from didn't include the fact that there was writing in the book, they only had "good" listed under condition.Anyway, I recommend this book for anyone looking to get started in draping that doesn't want to spend a fortune. Connie covers the basics and has good glossaries. The only other thing i would add is that for draping like this to work, you must have a custom dressform and the instructions on the Threads website for a paper mache form are very good and cheap to execute. The cellulose insulation for making the mache is $5 for a giant cube of it.

... for apparel design this book is one of the best, if not the best
When it comes to the essentials of draping for apparel design this book is one of the best, if not the best. When I originally went to school for fashion design back in 1997 this is the book we used, and it was an invaluable education for a lifetime.

It's not that helpful.
The instructions can be vague, or missing steps. The illustrations are mostly good. I am looking for something to replace this book because it's so difficult for me to figure out what to do without a teacher. I did use this book for a draping class, but I learned most of what I know from the teacher, not the book. I would read through the instructions before class, as it was assigned reading, but even with the fabric and dress form there in front of me, I still struggled. If it's possible, I suggest you take a class instead.
